My brother wanted to get a vintage watch that looks nice, but he doesn't know much about watches. A good friend of mine recommended this group. Do any of you see anything concerning that we should know about the Seamaster 1960 caliber 285?

This! Almost all vintage black dials are refinished, they command a high price if original and in good condition. You also can’t really tell what the font looks like with the blurry pics. Some refinishing is pretty good so you have to be able to look closely to see if it checks out

Need better pictures but on first glance it appears repainted.

Perhaps not repainted then. The hour marker mis-alignment on the previous photos must be down to the angle of the picture. Also, the paint creep up the hour markers seems like it may be reflection. I'd want to see some more pictures to be certain but now I'm swaying towards original

When refinishing dials with embossed figures it's almost impossible to keep the sharpness on the edges and facets crisp. These aspects are still as we would expect as is the crispness on the Omega symbol.

I'm seeing a nicely preserved original dial.

What's the asking price?

Thank you for your input, but my brother didn't even wait for me to offer help with the research. I just spoke with him now and before I came to ask the community, he had already made the purchase. It's a bit late, but it seems he paid close to $2k. Now, I'm catching the Vintage bug and might start looking for one soon.

I'm really excited to learn more here. I appreciate all of your experiences. I used to be more into modern timepieces, but exploring vintage watches is a great way to appreciate the historical aspect and see how timepieces have evolved.

Embossed dials aren't the most appealing in terms of quality, but they do seem to hold up pretty well.

This watch comes from the Omega Enthusiast. Known to be legit, watch will be serviced well. 2000$ is less than I would've expected him to ask tbh. Tell your brother to relax and enjoy.

Which is not to say that $2000 is in any way a bargain. Nice watches can be found for significantly less, but you're almost always going to pay more from a dealer.

Stick around an learn.
