This 22497 with never seen before dial just sold for USD 4.810 (with no shipping abroad). Really curious to see where this will show up. Epic piece. https://www.ebay.nl/itm/22567667029...KNu3zGZSeq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It has often happened to me that after winning an auction, the seller cancelled everything, obviously accepting a (higher) private offer. I have always been angry with such sellers and felt that acting like that as a buyer is “unfair”…
Well… I would like to apologize here publicly to the person who won this auction. I couldn’t bid as I don’t have a US address and don’t trust the “forwarding” companies. Just for “fun” I attempted to make a private offer to the seller after the auction’s end… and to my surprise he accepted and sent the watch to Europe.

So here is this 22497 Compur saying hello from Prague:

I appreciate your transparency, but in my opinion it's unethical to make an offer once the auction is complete.

if anything is unethical, it’s the seller for not honoring the winning bidder but either way, money talks and always has

This watch is pretty incredible for its era.. Just proves Universal was working on a different level back then. Imagine what they would be if they were still around today. Possibly a mixture of patek / vacheron with the edge of jaeger. It would've been amazing to see.

Best argument for not selling on OF that I’ve seen. All that happens here is nibble nibble nibble. Either way, bad form on the part of the seller.

I understand your view @bgrisso and that’s why I made my apologies, although I don’t think that making an offer or asking if there is still a possibility to discuss sale is against any rules and per se “unethical” (a rather strong word, isn’t it?)…
Just to fully clarify - I obviously tried to contact the seller well before the end of the auction to which I got no answer and repeated my offer after auction has ended, without expecting any response… because losing at auctions (and even not being able to participate in them) is simply part of the game and I am used to it.
But one would be an idiot not to ask about a watch if he is interested.

Sorry @Larry S , if this comment refers to my post, I unfortunately don’t understand what is meant.

I'm really surprised that eBay allows this. For many reasons, really, not least the fact that these days the platform is so heavily skewed towards protecting buyers' interests.

Well I have another take on this. If I would want to sell a pretty unique piece of which it is (very) hard to establish a value I may consider listing it on ebay and just see where it ends (and make sure that it is not in the bargain basement....)
