I've always wanted a vintage 2998. Yesterday I came across this "barn find" listing on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/336072963383

It's an original 2998-5 without bracelet. Looks like they found the watch in Hawaii, but it's missing a crown, bezel, and the movement needs servicing.

Are the hands correct? I thought vintage 2998 mostly had alpha hands.
And is the movement original?

Thanks

i recommend not bidding on that.

2998’s are kinda one of those - if you are asking, you shouldn’t be bidding kinda thing. They are increasingly hard to find complete and/or original.

it's a parts watch, an amalgamation of quite a few different things, let alone missing very important and valuable parts.

wait patiently for something worth putting your money toward if you want a 2998.

I swear people find these in desk drawers and then bury them in their garden beds for a day or two to make it look like they found them in a barn…

There’s absolutely nothing original about that watch. Well maybe the crud and beat up case.

I strongly suggest that before you bid on any watch that you do a bit of basic research.

For Speedmasters check out the excellent Speedmaster101 articles. For all watches go to something like Chrono24 website to get a good idea of what a watch should look like and what it may be may be worth.

Your watch has a 2998-5 back, case and 321 movement. Wrong dial and hands. No crown or bezel. The case has had a hard time.
Proper alpha hands will cost circa 3,000-5000, dial 3,000 to 5,000, crown 400, DON bezel 800 to 1,500, servicing (without parts needed) 500 to 800. Parts ? All figures in GBP ..... not $! You would be hard pressed to find the proper parts and it would take years.

However, the scrap value of the parts may be worth the current bid if a buyer can be found..
