that one looks good and of course the fact that it's paired with a UG strap increases confidence over a pile of loose buckles. It also depends on the source, how many they have for sale, if they keep popping up with more inventory as soon as this one is bought, etc

True. You know I need a buckle for that new tricompax 👹

The seller from Turkey seems legit. Looks like they have LOTS AND LOTS of odds and ends from different vintage pieces (buckles, rotors, movements, dials) 700 transactions and 100% feedback.

I'm assuming they are an older watchmaker of some kind that maybe happened upon a stash of UG buckles. But what do I know. We all have to tell ourselves something so we can sleep at night. Hahahaha

I have a few on various straps. This one has always intrigued me as it is not steel. It clearly says plaque. It is approx 19.5mm (outer) and 16.5mm (inner) ... Fits well on a 20mm strap.

What do we think of this one?

16mm. Looks a little different than my 14mm.

This one does not look good to me. Looks fake. The quality is too low.

I’ve bought a few of these over the years and honestly, the quality has been pretty awful. Ended up binning all of them - they kept catching the strap, scraping the leather, and none of them were made to proper specs. Either too tight or too loose for 16mm.

At this point, the reality is there are only a handful of dealers left who still a few original buckles left for sale, and they know exactly what they’ve got. Prices are high (sometimes painfully so), but supply is basically gone. I eventually tracked down a correct 1940s buckle for my Universal Genève Tri-Compax from 1945, and it set me back close to USD 300 all in with shipping to Singapore.

Took years of searching to get there...in the end, I’d rather just pony up and buy from someone who actually knows what they’re selling and can stand behind the product, instead of rolling the dice on random eBay listings. Expensive, yes.... but at least you know what you’re getting.

I had no opinion. Everyone else chimed in immediately to tell me it was fake 🤷🏻.

Either way, I was unable to purchase and ended up spending 4x on a 14mm buckle.

Looks very fake to me. Similar to the italian ones on ebay. Looks thin and irregular.

These ARE the Italian fakes on eBay, the listings are screenshotted if you scroll back in this thread. They are fake, this is a known repro seller. There’s no need to keep discussing this in circles.

The edges are not sharp. Overall low quality. See my photos of an unquestionably NOS example.

I disagree ... Here are some genuine buckles. As you can see the stamped "acier inox", "depose" and "swiss" lines up and is identical. I have not seen any fake buckle with the such fine and clean print. Usually they have none and if the do, it is never crisp and clean.

Then please buy one from the Italian dealer at 20 euros and you will understand what we mean 😀

Another I was looking at, but so many mixed signals as to what's fugazi or not. 🥵

These are original btw. I had sold them.

“Plaque G” on a purported steel buckle is never a good sign.

It looks like the gold plating may have been stripped on this one. Some remnants still seem to be visible

No. What you see, is brass under the chrome plate.
