What's with this movement? Is that all rust or just old oil? It looks very sad in this condition. It this something worth trying to repair or is it just good enough to learn what not to do for a newb?

It's rust. A pristine 1000-series movement actually looks rather pretty.

If it's free, then sure. Anything more than free I'd probably pass

If you are just learning, this is not for you.

Get an ETA 6497 or a clone of it to learn on.

Yes, just learning. I have a bunch of cheap movements I found in my attic, a few I just grabbed on eBay, and 3 my local watchmaker gave me. I was just browsing and seeing if there was something Omega and cheap to mess around with.

It's already up to $60 though.

It’s a large movement, suitable for beginners.

I have been doing a lot of command-R on ebay.
A lot of the smaller movements (ladies) have been going unbid at less than 20 bucks.
This movement does not seem to have come up in my searches, But for 60 it is not worth it. Especially when the parts sellers are breaking up sealed spare parts packages and selling each screw individually.

Every bit of iron is going to need to be replaced on that movement.

Oh, I forgot to note, I like to practice on benrus watches. Baylor (Zales house brand) are also good and if one is lucky it might even be a Heuer.
