Omega purchased on eBay…what am I missing?

Hi everyone! I recently purchased my first omega (Seamaster Planet Ocean; ref: 232.30.42.21.04.001). Very excited about it! The seller said it was a 2019, and after moving forward, the watch made it through eBay’s authentication process without a hitch.

Upon receiving, I noticed the serial (87247730) signifies something manufactured around 2014-2015. I brought it to my local omega store, and the sales associate seemed standoffish on offering any real guidance, saying there was no way to tell the year based on their system and couldn’t verify anything not purchased in their store besides the cost for more links (lol). They did say based on the model and card that 2019 “sounds correct,” but everything I am seeing indicates manufacturing far earlier and I’m not sure where to go from here. The manual does specify 2019, but this could simply be an unoriginal box and I assume does little to verify the watch.

The authentication gives me some confidence, and the watch looks very clean and up to standard (at least to my untrained eye). But is there something I am missing? Is there a valid justification as to why there is a disparity in the manufacture date provided vs the serial against omega’s manufacturing records? This is my first major watch purchase and I want to ensure I’m looking and assessing this correctly. Really appreciate any guidance you may be able to provide in advance!

Internet serialno databases aren't reliable as like for example ilovemySpeedmaster.com which is based on extracts, so I wouldn't base any conclusions on that.

The date on the card is more important imho.

First: The date on the card is the date of SALE, not manufacture. Watches can sit on a AD/OB's shelf for YEARS. I know the now-former-AD near me stock-piled 1861 speedmasters for quite a while, so he was selling them ~5-6 years after manufacture at minimum.

Second, this: "I noticed the serial (87247730) signifies something manufactured around 2014-2015." Is incorrect. The charts that gave you that information on manufacture date are completely unreliable after ~2000. Before then they are spotty, but afterwards they are nonsense. It isn't clear that Omega is even using sequential numbers anymore.

Firstly, nice watch. I really like the monochrome dial/hands/bezel combination. I'm not sure I knew this reference existed until now and I'm slightly jealous.

Secondly, welcome to the forum. We like pictures of nice watches and will give likes for them.

Ebay sellers don't always get spec info right, especially the year a watch was produced. As prior members pointed out, Omega released this reference around 2011 and discontinued it around 2016 but unsold inventory can sit in store for much longer. The Ebay seller was likely thinking about the year they acquired the watch, or just lazy about their listing. I don't know if Ebay verifies the listing info itself, so seller can make data entry mistakes that won't get caught. As others have pointed out, original paperwork will reference when the watch was sold, not manufactured.

Luxury watch stores are excited to sell you stuff but not always as excited to do much else unless you're a regular customer. If you went to the Omega store to ask them about an Omega you bought somewhere else, there's probably only so much they will do and Omega doesn't publish manufacturing dates. Sounds like they could have been friendlier though.



This happened to me as a first time Omega buyer a few years ago. Hopefully you're excited to own and wear it. Be careful worrying about minor details like this. That's how some of us have become obsessive watch addicts.
