Thoughts on this 2852 Constellation

Hi guys,

Still on the hunt for a nice seamaster or, more likely a connie with the 50s fat arrowhead hour markers. Got a nice example here from Japanese dealer Tachibana Watch Shop. Granted, if patina isnt your thing then this won't be for you.

Any immediate red flags jumping out to the 2852 experts out there? Thanks!

From my perspective, the hands are all original and the lettering is correct. odd discolouration on the sharktooth markers at 12, 3, 6,9 and very partially at 1. Not a redial, MOY test is cleared. RE lettering and straight legged M on chronometre. The case is in decent condition, unpolished? lugs not terribly sharp but pretty nice. Caseback medallion is in good condition, with all stars sharp and visible. seems to not had much wrist-time? Decagonal crown is period correct. no images of movement - but dealer states serial number is 1543. might request some images of the inside before making any move.

Looks original to me, polished particularly noticeable on back, more patina than I would like but that is personal taste, what is asking price?

around 1600. i see a little worn around 'waterproof' - is this the evidence of polishing you mention?

I think the case is fairly good but the dial is too much for me.
1600 what?

yes very shiny. Constellation text on back not shown. Japanese sellers tend to offer shiny watches its a matter of taste. Lugs look ok though

Long term moisture damage, make certain of the movement condition and scrutinize the serial number and caliber.

Looks legit to me, condition is mediocre (stained and blistered dial, machine-buffed case). It's not for me. Price is your decision.

There's another Cal.505 2852 you might want to take a look at here:

Another Japanese watch shop, based in Setagaya. I've bought from them and visited both shops. They are really good guys to deal with.

Again though, the dial has what can only be described as "character".

Thanks Horsin. It’s lovely - and the daggers are excellent, but I’m being super picky and wanted the larger shaped indices.

So you have been to the Tachibana and found them to be reputable and proper? They seem great.

The dealer states ‘This watch has been overhauled, so the back cover cannot be opened.’ - is this something that happens with these? I’d have thought overhauled or not you could open it up and photograph.

Being super picky and patient will ultimately get you want you want. I don't know Tachibana, but it looks like they have some beautiful pieces!

Definitely! Is it suspicious that the deal states the watch cannot be opened due to recent overhaulling?

IMHO, with that reason yes. Being a newbie, I won't consider any watch that I can't see movement and inside case back.

They are saying that they don't want to open the watch because it was cleaned and sealed by a watchmaker.

Maybe I’m weird but I still like it haha!

Thank you Dan. So it’s an understandable reluctance.

It's not ideal, but I can understand it. Especially if it comes with a warranty. Still, it's nice to see the inside because you never know what you'll find. I've purchased watches and later found that they had the wrong case-back, missing parts, etc.
