Ends nearly 500usd (converted) + shipping costs + incurred costs + crown + cost of finishing and repairing well => well done ~ 950 USD. The price is not cheap I will definitely give up IMO 馃榾

I think that is where the market is. I will be happy in the end, if all comes in under $1000. If you are happy with your collection, then I would give up on buying more.

Of course, it would have been better financially for @wagudc if he鈥檇 been able to pay less for it but whatever he might have paid, the cost of servicing it would have been the same regardless.

On the other hand, he鈥檚 sourced, bid for and won the watch for around $500 plus postage and it鈥檚 what he wanted and, crown apart (and that isn鈥檛 a huge deal), he鈥檚 got a watch that he wanted and will probably enjoy but if he doesn鈥檛, he鈥檒l recoup much of his outlay selling it on as newly serviced and cleaned.

In reality, the difference in cost is likely to be be no more than taking the wife, kids and a couple of in-laws out for a meal - and the pleasure element will last longer.

Oh, and they鈥檙e not making 14710s anymore and they鈥檙e very popular.

My thoughts exactly. It is the watch I wanted, and to be honest I would have paid more. I didn't ask for an assessment of the price, just the watch. I greatly appreciate all the feedback that I got, and the potential areas of concern. It is good to go into a deal with as much info as possible. I took a bit of a risk. I might regret it, but I don't think so. We shall see.

An update for you all. The watch arrived today and it exceeds all my expectations. Some of the posts on this thread made me nervous. There absolutely was a concern for corrosion issues, and I was concerned about the possible staining on the edge of the dial. Good news, all potential areas of corrosion seem to be schmutz, the watch runs, the brown staining seems to be non-existent, the bracelet fits, and I have a a NOS original crown en route from @new_heuer.

As already said, I appreciate all the feedback on this thread. A big thanks to @ConElPueblo for his How to Fish thread and a super big thanks to @seekingseaquest for some help via PM. Also, I'm super appreciative to @new_heuer for reaching out with a crown. I know the gamble could have turned out differently, but this is exactly the watch I wanted. It arrived an hour ago, and I am still giddy with excitement. This is such a great community, thanks all. Once the crown arrives, I will promptly send it off to my watchmaker. I'll post another update when it comes back.

To satisfy my curiosity, what was the size? 6.5 inch wrist size? (16.5cm)
I was busy counting the links and comparing to mine.

I am just shy of 6.5" in the wrist. The bracelet is currently a hair too snug, but there are two micro adjust holes for it to expand. I think I will go out one hole.

Indeed! I probably would not have had the guts to bid very much, but the watch had the approval of the head fishing instructor. So I was good to go.

Edited, my previous post to acknowledge @new_heuer who was great helping me out with the crown. Since we made the deal over PM, I wasn't sure if he wanted it publicized. He was a pleasure to work with.

I think you should also be looking for a stem? Regardless, the cost of a crown and stem and a well done service will round this one out quite nicely. The 501 movement is quite good and should run incredibly well once done. My recommendation would be to have your watchmaker install a new mainspring when he does the service. This is the one movement component that doesn't stand the test of time and now is a great time to replace it. This is your option and just my personal opinion.

Thanks for the tips Andy. I am assuming my watchmaker who has an Omega parts account will have no difficulties finding a stem, and he includes a new mainspring as part of his standard service. He will inspect the watch and give me an itemized estimate before doing any work. I am guessing a new stem and a few other parts may need replacing. I just wanted to make sure and get an original crown, because the current replacement crown is quite a bit different.

Its great you were able to get your hands on that crown. A majority of these watches, including the later versions, seem to lack the original crown and have the modern replacement. When I bought mine (late 1960's with a Cal 565), I had thought the orignal crown was an incorrect replacement, because the replacement crowns are just so much more common on these.

Do you have the part number for that crown? I might need to get one myself.

Thanks

I am not sure of the part number, they are no longer available. @new_heuer might be able to help you.

and that watch only requires a little TLC. enjoy.

I've been trying to figure this out with little success. The listed crown ref. number on the lists circulating on the forum is 42055, which is the newer replacement. I have an old Omega bestfit list which has 8100/1056. That may or may not be correct, but a quick search pulls this up on ofrei. Looks similar...

Do you have a Bestfit number for 166.010, which is what I actually have?

Thanks

Sorry, unfortunately my list doesn't go that far. I took a look at my 166.010 and the crown seems to measure at 5mm. Checking my crown folio from 1962, I found one that seems to match up the closest. Seems like a 4206, but this seems like a really old number....not sure if that is helpful at all. Here are the two pages that seem relevant incase they are helpful.
