The Discount Thread

This is a good thread to help level set some sort of expectation for the buyer. The deal isn't always chiseling the sales person but rather having an educated conversation with them and if it's a more hard to find watch let them know you are willing to pay a bit more and when it's something that's widely available ask for a deeper discount.

AD Cost (Current models in production only)

Rolex -38%
The highest discount I've ever received on a Rolex is 27%. Discrediting the over retail models, the lowest discount I've received is 7% off on limited steel ladies/oyster perpetuals. I've heard from several authorized dealers 38% is their cost.

Cartier -40%
The highest discount I've ever received on a Cartier is 30%. Just today I lost a sale because a customer received a 35% discount from an AD. He showed me the invoice and has been a wonderful customer of mine for several years. Not sure if the AD had a hard month or if he owned him money but my discount got crushed... It was a 2020 steel 26mm watch so I would have assumed my discount was good.

If we have any hard evidence to add to this thread it's greatly appreciated.

Best,

Thomas

I must be shopping at the wrong places!

I got my Rolex in NJ from an AD (so it would ship to me in NYC and I wouldn't have to pay any taxes). For my and my mother's OP34, I was only able to get 13% discount off the ticketed price.

For my Cartier Ballon Bleu 36mm two-tone, I was only able to get a 14% discount from NYC AD (could have gotten it 20% discount if I've known about the NJ route).

For my IWC Pilot, I was only able to get a 18% discount from a NJ AD.

I found the ADs at Heathrow airport in London selling the same Rolex and Ballon Bleu for 20-25% off ticketed price. Perhaps the dollar exchange helped.

Max I have got off an IWC was c. 25%, but walking past a jewellers yesterday I saw a couple of current models with 20% knocked off the price tag in the window (i.e. being advertised at that reduction).

Omega I once managed over a 40% reduction on, but find that without any effort (i.e. just randomly emailing a few ADs and waiting for a reply) you should be able to get close to a 15% discount (OBs have been the most stubborn, in my experience) - after that it's down to your haggling skills ;-)

So, unless it's a limited edition of some sort, I'd suggest the minimum off a new Omega is 15%.

Seconded!
I scored 20% off at my Omega AD, offering to pay "however they wanted" (ie. cash, debit, credit, fund transfer).

EDIT: brand added

I concur, I think 15%-20% for almost no effort (simply asking, emailing 5 ADs randomly or offering their preferred payment) seems to be the range.

The worst I was offered was from an OB, 5% and a free service, which in value took it into the range above but I wasnt so keen on have the 'credit' for the service over cold hard cash remaining in my pocket!

My Omegas purchased from ADs have generally been in the 15 - 20% range, and on one notable occasion -- still fresh in the memory -- 45%, though the the salesman who offered these deals at the store I generally patronize seems to have left/been hurried on, and the deals there are now as thin on the ground as the SS model offerings in their Rolex corner.

I had much worse luck in NYC last week -- but that's a sad, short story for another day.

Best I've received for Omega at an AD was a shade over 25%, but that was about 2-3 years ago.

Was walking past again, below are the IWCs I saw a while ago (discounts at the bottom of the photo):

Struck up a conversation with the manager of an OB about the Omega he was wearing.

He told me that staff at OBs get 1 watch every 2 years that they can buy at cost - and that cost is 40% of the ticket price.

He also said they get a 'wearer', that they dont purchase straight away but can wear and then purchase at a later date - they are given a 10% discount for every year they wear the watch prior to finally purchasing it.

Such info is the benefit of being the first person into an empty store in the morning it seems.

A little update on this, as I was back there today - turns out the OB I found the above out from is operated by Watches of Switzerland, which isn't shown in store at all - I only found out because I had a watch serviced by an 'Omega OB' and asked this store to send it back under the service warranty to sort out an outstanding issue - they told we they were a 'Watches of Switzerland OB' rather than an 'Omega OB' so weren't technically part of the same 'family' and hence had to enter all my details in again for the watch.

The inference is therefore that the above cost prices should roughly apply to ADs (as opposed to just OBs).

He also told me I could buy anything I wanted with 10% deposit and 0% financing cost with payments over 4 years - if you assume they are financing the 0% financing cost for 4 years, it should equate to a c. 15% discount just for paying cash (using an implied unsecured loan rate of 3.5% per annum).

Hi all,
I am considering my first luxury watch purchase and one of my dream watches is a hesalite Speedy. I’ve done some browsing in a few stores and one of my local Used Watch stores (who has new Speedys) has offered me around a 3.5% discount ($7,330 AUD) Haven’t walked into an Omega Boutique yet with intent to purchase so haven’t bothered asking about price. Are there any tips for a first timer? I’m a bit nervous about what to accept. Reality is there are new Speedys on Chrono24 that work out to be about $6,250 AUD (after taxes and import duty). I’d love to get the ‘boutique experience’ but not sure if it’s worth paying full price for ($7,600 AUD)!

Appreciate any advice!

Hi All,
I recently purchased a new PO 39.5 mm steel on steel (215.30.40.20.03.001) in AD "Rivoli" in Dubai.
My discount was 22%, including VAT return on border crossing.
HTH.

So how much was the VAT return portion on the deal?

If you live in Sydney I can point you to an AD who has given me 15%-20% off new Omegas in the last year, including a new Speedmaster Moon.

I’m in Melbourne but moving to Mooloolaba in Jan so Sydney might be a bit hard but I’d entertain a remote purchase if the price was right. If you can PM me some details I’d really appreciate it.
