Walked into the AD rolex and looked at the rolex 39 mm explorer . Thinking about upcoming 50 birthday gift to myself . is it me or does anyone think it's way too thin . My thought were it would look killer on a leather strap when I'm 75 .

Never have seen it in person. I don't find the 1016 too thin, though, but what's your wrist size?

Nice indulgence to celebrate a milestone birthday.

IMO, the 39mm Explorer (ref. 214270) is a great size, and certainly is considered by many to be an iconic watch. Can't recall hearing it described as too thin, but watches are a personal item, and tastes in size, material, etc. etc. vary widely.

If it doesn't suit your taste, keep looking.

Yeah, definitely a matter of personal taste. On the other hand, I was shocked how thick the Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue is (being a modular chronograph movement).

11.28mm. Over a centimeter. Nearly half an inch. Too thin? Too thin to stand on to reach the top shelf in the closet? Yes, I suppose so.

I'd far prefer it to be too thin vs a chunky tall watch, those end up smashed in to too many things 😀 Thin is in!

That is ridiculously thick!!!! What they do put there? A dictionary?
Last week I tried on Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. I already feel it as too thick. Cal 9300 achilles heel.
But this one? ::facepalm1::

One of the reasons I like my SS Daytona so much is that although its an automatic chronograph in a 100M W/R case, its only 12mm thick, makes for a sublimely wearable and comfortable piece.

Slightly off topic but how thick are the thinner El Primeros?

It's the size it needs to be. Rolex doesn't add superfluous thickness because it looks better. An oyster case is designed to meet a specific depth rating and then 25%. It is what it is, for a reason

Needs to be more like the Milguis .Needs to be a tad beefier

Well, you already have the answer. Choose Milgauss instead. I always respect Milgauss above Explorer.

The Milgauss is a superb watch, I am really, REALLY tempted to pick one up. Trev's even been trying to talk me out of it and failing 😀

I just love the GV in so many ways.
