·I have my reservations about Naomi Osaka’s ‘walk-on’ outfits but - regardless of the principle - it’s difficult not to say that she looks fabulous in her latest Wimbledon offering.

·Well, Serena out in the first round to a player that was on a huge losing streak. There were some good shots and serves on her part, but she seemed to struggle on the returns (standing too close IMO), and the movement wasn’t there.
I didn’t see the stats on this but it appeared to me that the longer the rally went the worse off it was for her. She didn’t seem to be enjoying it at all, and maybe the realization that the game has moved on hit home? She has a much better chance of moving past the first round in doubles with Venus.
First round was tough for the Canadian side…Felix played quite well and Gabe Diallo came through in 5 when Bonzi retired, but everyone else is out in singles.
A few upsets…Shelton out to the 140th ranked player, plus a few others. Looking forward to round 2.

·Hey, sometimes you just need to strike a pose out on the courts…
This was from Saturday when we had our Wimbledon Woody event, where we all dressed in whites and played with wooden racquets. I didn’t have any white shorts and since one of the ladies brought extra white skirts, I was happy to borrow one.
These are the racquets my wife and I played with…
It was the first time I had ever used a wooden racquet, so I was expecting it to be bad. But my serve was great and it forced you to really swing on the groundstrokes. Hard to get topspin, but I was fine with that. Struggled a bit with backhands, in particular when trying to use some finesse…like on a drop shot.
I was surprised at how heavy these were even with the small head and sweet spot.
Outfit - Ms Osaka just got schooled! True Olympian confidence making it look just easy.
Wimbledon - I hope we can see a Sinner : FAA semifinal; can't really work out the lower half of the MS draw. V impressed on Monday with young Rafa Jodar - doesn't look like a grass court first timer!

·Played a doubles event on Canada Day with my wife. 4 groups with 4 teams in each, and you played the other 3 teams in your group. Because it was hot (understatement) instead of playing 2 of 3 sets, we played "8 game pro sets" so a race to 8 games for each match.
First match we jumped out to a 6-3 lead, then wobbled a bit, but won it 8-6.
Second match we won easily 8-1 - the odd part is that the man on this team was the weaker player, and I played him 2 years ago in singles and he beat me, but in this match he was terrible (thank you for making it a short match!).
Third match - older couple (older than us!) and the guy was a total pusher. The woman hit some decently formed shots, but he just stood there in no man's land about half way between the base line and the service line, and took every ball on the full, in sort of underhand volleys. I always find this kind of player difficult to deal with (we have a pickleball player who plays like this also) and my typical deep shots to the baseline that jam people are just shots he sticks the racquet out on and they are back at my feet before I know it. Started lobbing the partner at the net and won some points that way until she clued in and backed up. I think maybe I need to serve and volley on players like this, and also come in after returning serve - I think it's the only way to combat this style of player who sort of clogs up the court and doesn't give you room to hit groundstrokes into. Any thoughts from the players here?
Ended up losing that one 8-4, which put us in 2nd in our group. We then played another 2nd place team from another group, just a 10 point tiebreak though. Lost that one badly at 10-3 (played 2 guys, one I know well and is a great player). We then played another team that lost their first tiebreak and we won that one 10-6.

Felix played a nice match yesterday...seemed tighter than the score suggests though. Andreeva going out - didn't see that coming but good for Barbora!

·I know there isn't a lot of love on this forum for Osaka but a helluva win today against the world #1. Osaka is a tough 14 seed. I'm rooting for Pegula v Osaka in the semis.

·FAA v ADF was a great match. Going in I was 50-50 on who would win. ADF coming in just having won his first title, and FAA not having a really consistent season. On top of that that last time they played was 2025 Aussie open when we were there, and ADF won in 5.
Felix pulled it out - not sure what was going on with Alejandro's ankle, and too much drama about if after IMO.

But Djoker just found how to win the points that mattered, when they mattered. Goodness knows how - not sure he does either: the match turned on the final five minutes!
Djoko has no shot to equal the beauty of a FAA inside-out forehand (name other player/shot of choice), but he can defend like no-one else ever. Personally I think young Sinner will have just that 1% relentless accuracy and pressure that proves too much for the 39 year-old to handle - we'll see.
Meantime, Felix is finally locked into the public consciousness as he deserves, with Zverev and Fritz, and he should walk tall now.

·I am very surprised and disappointed that FAA lost this match. I don't think he played his best tennis.
It is unbelievable that Djokovic was able to maintain his level for 5hr15min. With 2 days to recover, I'm curious if he will be able to continue maintaining this level.
Sinner needs to serve really well. An off day may not work out so well for him. So far he didn't play any lights-out best tennis.

·Great semi today between Muchova and Gauff. Muchova held her nerve and Gauff did not. I read before the tournament started that they informed all the players where all cameras were, to avoid embarrassment should anyone want to…vent…

·A rather routine win for Sinner. To be fair, Djokovic was compromised by the 5hr15min marathon with FAA. Sinner wasn't working too hard, conserving his energy. One break per set in less than 3 hours is what was needed to move on to the final.

·It was VERY routine work for Sinner. Only one break point chance for ND and Sinner easily erased that with an ace.
All over the news here but maybe not everywhere - FAA has broken with his long time coach Freddy Fontang. I've thought for a while now that he needs a change. I know they tried the part time thing with Uncle Tony (that was a bust) but he needs someone to help push him to the next level. No indication of who with take the place of Fontang.

·The quarters and semis had some good match ups but the men's and women's final were both underwhelming.
The men's championship could have been good with the top two seeds playing for the title. But Zverev ran out of answers quick. Serving was incredible though.
On the women's side, for me anyway, there could not have been two less interesting players in that final. I literally didn't even watch that one.
Wimbledon has lost some of its shine though I did take the opportunity to have some strawberries and cream. Thankfully the US Open is right around the corner.
