Supply of new Speedmaster

I spoke to someone yesterday (in the UK) that told me that some ADs had sold out of the new Speedmaster. Not sure if I believe the rumour but wanted to know if anyone had first hand knowledge of the matter. Thoughts?

Sorry, are you referring to the 3861 model?
Yes, the 3861. I was specifically discussing the 310.30.42.50.01.001 with the individual in question.

When I bought my hesalite in February, the AD was out of sapphire sammys.

Just checked online and a fair few ADs appear to have them in stock - £5,710.00

Thank you for asking. I'm intrigued to know if some ADs are running low on stock. The watch is definitely available at some ADs but are any of them out of stock I wonder? If so, it may demonstrate a shift in strategy along the lines of the Rolex business model. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it though.

I've also noticed fewer are available on C24 and Ebay in the UK and the prices have shot up for used watches. I also read that ADs aren't offering the same discounts they used to.
I am taking a huge leap here but I suspect Omega are restricting supply but my evidence is pretty thin so far. Just gut instinct.

I wouldn't read much in to some dealers being out of stock at any one time, just normal business activity.

Could be many factors in the UK - Ukraine/ Russia issue causing stock/ supply issues in Europe. Ferry issues in Dover & P&O again causing transport issues.

From what I can gather and read into Omega are looking to up their market position, following Rolex (who are now pushing for the Patek position - limited supply, exclusivity etc) by doing so, less discount now available on models.

maybe this dealer or a few didnt order sufficient qty thinking it would not be popular & are now surprised how well it's selling & they are caught with their pants down?

yeah, this could be another reason -- Omega pushing into Rolex spot as Rolex pushes alongside PP....

The MoonSwatch actually did cause a significant increase in demand for the real 3861 Moonwatch in the short term which may have added to some localised supply issues but they’re being churned out so they’ll catch up.

Omega are not restricting supply.

If only Omega could increase my supply of money I'd be at my local AD picking one up.

I bought the Sapphire version yesterday, the AD said the Sapphire was in short supply and could not give much discount on it though the Hesalite did not pose a problem. As I was about to walk out the shop he suddenly phoned his head office and managed a 14% discount? Could be a national sales ploy. The watch cost me less than so called “new” versions on a well known auction site.

That's a great price you snagged it for

From what I'm generally seeing online, whenever someone outside of this forum says they've picked up a new 3861 the majority of the time it's the sapphire model.

I don't know why this is since I always thought the 1861 hesalite was the more popular version. Maybe it's just more people wanting Speedmasters these days compared to a few years ago but being put off by a "fragile" hesalite crystal that scratches, or not wanting to be spending this level of money on something that isn't sapphire.

I think there's a lot more buyers now who want it as a flagship Omega luxury watch and Seamaster alternative, compared to before where people really wanted something as true to the original moon lineage as possible and most buyers seemed to be watch-nerd enthusiast types. Also nearly every special edition that's been released has used sapphire so if people bought them first (as a lot of people in this hobby are now doing solely for investment value) sapphire is probably what they're used to so they chose sapphire for a standard model.

I think the reason why the sapphire 3861 is so popular compared to the 1863 is because the 3861 actually has a few items that differentiate it from the hesalite. In the 1861 version, the only difference besides the sapphire top was the sapphire being slightly thinner with a clear caseback. The 3861 sapphire again is slightly thinner, has the applied logo, different bracelet, and clear caseback. It really wasn't worth spending the extra money to get the 1863 while the new model price difference gets you more visual differences.
