This is the picture I cribbed from an old eBay auction, circa 2007:

I think it was taken without the crystal.

There was a version in a slightly different 18K case that came with a white and gold dial:

Both of the these are as 1950's as a Cadillac Eldorado with the big tail fins.

And now mine will be off to the watchmaker tomorrow for a well-deserved rest.

Honestly, I never thought I would find the one above. I never, ever, ever thought I would be able to buy it for what I paid.

Wow, so a long coveted prize then... Congrats!!!
As for the white one, if it's yours put me down on the dibs wait list! Beautiful.

I wear my Gruen techni-quadron...think Rolex Prince but at 1/3 of the cost. It is very low profile, and discreet. Plus, wearing something from the 1930's just seems right with a tux...sorry, no pic as it is in the safety deposit box.

An an aside, I was under the impression that a square/tank watch was considered to be more formal than a round one. Am I mistakent?

Not mine. Just one I saved for reference purposes.

The case on that one was heavily and not very attractively engraved.

Thanks for clarifying. Very nice watch. Kind of strange how wide the lugs are relative to the case though.

Yeah, mine is 20mm (3/4"). Try finding a 20mm watch with a 13mm buckle which was original to this watch.

If I ever get it serviced (needs a new crystal, strap, and to have the second hand straightened and re-attached, as well as a full service) I would be tempted to wear my Hamilton Thin-o-matic. It was the watch presented to my grandfather when he retired from Bell Labs in 1969/70. It's a little small for my taste, but probably would be good for wearing with a tux.

(not my picture)

It doesn't get any better than a vintage AP ultra-thin.

Automatic caliber 2120:

Manual caliber 2003:

Now that is appropriate in almost any situation.

Nothing says "Dress-up Nights" like a Patek 5115. A simple time-keeper with an enamel dial always looked just right 😀
Ah, yes. The Patek, my go to gala/wedding watch.

It seems to me that this is optional. However, I think it would be great if you could share a photo. However, if you want help, it would be cool to still share photos so that you can advise something. Not so long ago I also had a wedding. We also had an issue with the clock. We ordered a blue suit from https://www.gentlemansguru.com/product-category/wedding-tuxedos/ and just didn't know what watch would look good with this suit. As a result, we decided that my gray metal watch would look good. So don't worry so much, it's not that important.

I had a similar dilemma lately and I wore these, meaning both.
One was 1959 18K rose gold Omega, another Zenith A3818 revival.
Both are chronographs, but Omega is undeniably a subzero dressy watch!

I got married this last Saturday. I picked out the Tux and she picked out the watch and band. I know this isn’t going to be too popular but the band matched my brown wingtips perfectly.

And she loves my Speedmaster more than any other watch (hates my explorer 2, says it’s boring…maybe she’s a member here???)

Edit: just FYI, minister is wearing a no date sub under that sleeve

My go to dress watch, Hamilton Piping Rock. Fits under cuffs perfectly, looks great with a tux, is classy without being overly showy.

Maybe this one. I don’t own a tuxedo, so I’ll likely never have to decide.

None of those you just mentioned, that is if you follow a purist view... https://www.gentlemansgazette.com/black-tie-watch/

but then, you can always say "I wear what I ever I want"
Great thread and some lovely watches here.
When I went to a black tie function a couple of months ago most people there seemed to be in the "wear whatever I want" camp. I saw people wearing divers and smart watches with their tuxes but I couldn't recall seeing a single dress watch. I myself wore a Speedy FOIS on a Forster flat link. However, after reading this thread I might try wearing this piece, which my wife gave me for my most recent birthday, at the next black tie:
