Probably he is an easy target and doesn't deserve to be booed mercilessly. But he had 3 lockouts during his tenor, including the cancelling of an entire season. He also got rid of the traditional conference and division names in favor or regional names for casual fans. There was also this

A guy in a suit is never going to be a fan favorite at a sporting event, most of the time. Bill Wirtz used to get booed all the time too, and when Rocky took over the fans loved him. Another sports truism is everyone love a winner and the Hawks won under Rocky.

Thank you! Very good points, and this paragraph in that story rings so true to me with regards to Bettman:

"The truth of the matter is, John Scott’s career may suffer because of the trade that was involved in this whole ordeal. That’s why businessmen and women run teams and the NHL’s front office. To maximize the amount of money the league brings in regardless of morals, and Scott fell victim to that in the worst way possible."

The NHL needs to be a successful business, but how you get to be there counts, at least in my books.

And let's not overlook what is his biggest sin in my view - not finding a way to have the best hockey players in the world consistently at the Olympic Games. His defenders will point to insurance and nonsense like that, but virtually every other major sport that participates in the Olympics manages to find a way, but Gary somehow just can't. To deny the Games the best players in what is arguably the marquis sport, is simply unforgivable in my opinion.

This was the part of the article that hit me the hardest:

I try not to think about how young my daughters are, and how much they’ll hate the move. Or about the stress it will place on my wife, who is nine months pregnant with twins. Or about the fondness I feel for the guys in Phoenix — our group that no one believed in — and the pride I feel for what we’ve accomplished together. I try not to think about how I don’t want to leave.

It came from this article John wote which is a good read if you're interested.

My prediction is that there will be 7 goals scored in this game. I do not know who will score them.

I'll be wearing my 'Beezer jersey for good luck. I may be dating myself with that comment for those who know...

Go Panthers!

There’s OILER fans, and there’s PANTHER fans. Rabid fans of the loser on Monday night will have:

ESPECIALLY those who have been putting down the Oilers, (if they win)!

Looking at all game 7 results - https://thehockeynews.com/news/every-stanley-cup-final-game-7-in-nhl-history
Home teams is 12-5
Last 3 game sevens were won by the road team
Before that home team won 6 in a row.

Not emotionally connected to either team, and there are players on both sides I would like to see win a Cup. I can't imagine what it would be like to watch this as a fan of the team (although I sat through Cubs winning in 2016 and that game 7 even went rain delay and extra innings! I remember my 16 year old son yelling F*C*!! and throwing the remote against the couch when Rajai Davis hit a game tying homer in the 8th. But I digress).

Someone will get to be a hero tonight, and have a moment they will never forget.

Like polls in an election, it’s the final ballot count that is all that matters! I know I am in a minority here, but GO OILERS!!!!!!!!

I don't think you really are - you have just done a tremendous job of convincing yourself that everyone else is against the Oilers...

Congratulations to the Panthers who absolutely earned this win. A gutsy win and comeback after a colossal scare. But really: Florida fans booing McDavid (and the Canadian national anthem occasionally), arguably the best player on the planet? Sure, ‘Florida Man….’ 😁

It would have been great for the Cup to come back north, but I’m thrilled for Ontario’s Paul Maurice, one of the most deserving of coaches, ever. And @Canuck, a small consolation: Tkachuk, Bennett and Lomburg all cut their teeth in a Flames jersey.

Well, I guess all those crows can relax now.

Florida managed to stave off a choke of historic proportions.

It was a tight game - well played by both teams for the most part.

It would have been great for the Cup to come back north

The cup always comes back to Canada...where most of the players are from. 😉

In the seven game series, goals by Oilers, 23. Panthers, 18. In a way, Panthers were outplayed. Oilers scored enough goals but they came at the wrong time. 🙁

That was a great game 7. Right down to the final buzzer. Congrats to the Cats.

A bit disappointed to see McDavid awarded the Conn Smythe. Sure he had a great playoff, no doubt about that. But the playoffs are all about the Cup. How valuable can he be? His team didn't win. Take him out of the picture and his team still doesn't win.

Without mentioning any names, some of the Oilers stars appear to have folded their tents during the series. Missing in action!
