Either my brother was extremely lucky or there is no shortage and rather a controlled release of SS sport models into the market by Rolex. He went int an AD in Carmel, CA put his name down for a BLNR and in less than a week they called him. He had no previous history buying any Rolex from any AD and has only previously purchased a GMT master 16750 on the second hand market. Neither him or I are overly wealthy but we can afford a retail piece if one pops up. He was even given a few days to think over the purchase. He was given his warranty card, box and other papers and the stickers were left on the watch. In essence he could’ve flipped it the next day but of course he didn’t. I just can’t believe it’s as bad as the forum chatter would lead on. The only thing that was questionable was the AD said that they preferred to sell to locals over out of town era hunting for watches. Who knows but this story at least proves that it can be done and done without all of the shenanigans about warranty holding and signing no sell contracts. And because we need some pics. I got to check it out two weeks ago. Such a cool watch.
Good for him!

Have you gone to the Boutique at South Coast or into Traditional’s Rolex boutique at Fashion Island though? Wastelands unless you want a weird dial variations or small DJ.

Yep. This is why even though I do hear stories like my brothers, when I go into AD’s I can’t help but wonder what the F is going on! The truth is that only Rolex know and whatever it is we have to decide to play their game or not. I’ve chosen not to at this point but if I do happen to walk into an AD and they happen to have some of the desired sport models I would probably pounce. But I won’t be playing the years long waitlist game.

Speaking of South Coast, I was just there about a week ago.
They had a 2016 Explorer there (probably the only steel watch in the boutique), and when I tried to use the Easylink extension, the salesperson gave me the stink eye and asked me "what are you trying to do??"

So in the last 36 months the worldwide AD market had a meeting (in the Caymen Islands or maybe Singapore) and decided they are going to dump all their stock of stainless sport watches on the gray market simultaneously. 750000 of them!
And this actually raised the prices on the grey market!
And Rolex hasn’t done anything different
And all this time Rolex has been pumping out the same numbers from 5 years ago?
And no one from Rolex HQ has noticed that THIER ENTIRE AD NETWORK is completely out of stainless sport models?
No one in Geneva thinks this is odd?

Or maybe there is a shortage

First of all, having thought and read some more, I think you are possibly right that ss stockmay be getting slightly restricted at the source from Rolex, for whatever reason.

However, I definitely think there's is a significant element of what I describe.

You mentioned a couple of times things like "dumping all their stock on the grey market" and "having a meeting/simultaneously deciding to do this". I didn't say that. What I said, and what I think is happening is ADs over the course if a year or two started doing this. They didn't need to have a meeting - they have eyes and can see what's going on around them in other areas and the practice could easily have started in one or several areas and spread.

Secondly, I don't think they're dumping stock on the grey market. Given how popular Rolex ss models are there isn't usually a whole load of stock to dump. As new ss stock comes I think ADs trickle a large portion out to the grey market and another letiok out to well established customers/those who recently bought a couple watches/lucky ones who are in the right place at the right time.

I don't think Rolex cares about this. It's increasing the desirability of their brand, resale value is through the roof - which makes a rise on rrp easier to implement and all ss stock is sold before it hits the shelves.

The main point for me though, is people you and I are arguing about it on the internet. As someone else mentioned, we have all these online watch 'journalists' and no one has thought to investigate this?!

I just find it funny that the local AD has a huge billboard next to the highway with a SS Sub on it, yet they don't ever have any to sell. How can you advertise something you never have in stock?

I disagree there is no incentive for Rolex dealers to sell into the grey market at all right now.

Simply put there are not actually grey market watches out there. They are flippers not watches leaving the store below MSRP.

Surely that's still grey market - whether they're above or below retail, they're new watches but not from an AD and not at rrp.

Either way, I don't think ADs are selling to greys beliw retail. I think they're selling to greys/flippers/calm them what you will, at/above rrp and then greys/flippers are adding their margin on top.

That's funny, I stopped by this same dealer (https://www.fourtane.com/) this morning and was surprised to see several Subs, a GMT, black and blue dial Milgauss, and both flavors of Explorer in the display cases to try on, along with some nice (but a tad pricey) vintage versions of same. They seemed thrilled to sell me a watch, though I resisted temptation - I really want an Explorer 1 but the 214270 is just too big for my taste!

That’s good to know. My brother said that they did make a comment about being more apt to sell to locals vs. out of towners.

I'm sure that's their preference - though Carmel being a tourist town I'm sure 75% of their walk-ins are out-of-towners! I also didn't ask to look at any of the really trendy stuff, so who knows if they hold that back for preferred demographics.

i wonder how the story would change if a buyer had $8k-10k cash in hand, when they went in to inquire.

How else would I buy my watch?
Makes no difference. Of course not.

I gotta say the Rolex policies with supply/demand is just a real turn-off for me.
I mean: I buy a thing for 10k that another thing does for 10 bucks (even better and more accurate) - and they tell me I can't because...

Seems it works out for them (thanks to instagram!!)

For me it's a turn-off...
And: I like waiting for beautiful stuff that I have earned / collected some money for... But it's easier waiting for a BMW because of the exclusive feeling you get with it (if you ever picked one up at the factory you know what I mean + they built exactly what you want, you get a factory-tour, some food,...)...

If you ever picked up a Rolex - not so special and exclusive feeling...

And that is where Rolex fυcked up in my opinion...

I tried to put my name on the wait list at the two closest ADs to me. One flat out said no and other somewhat, begrudgingly took it. I've purchased Rolexs from both of those ADs. I've called the 10 or so closest ADs to me and the majority of them are no longer taking names. I managed to get on a few lists. At one AD for a BLRO I was 20th in line, a BLNR I was 8th in line. I couldn't get on the Daytona list. I also called two ADs in the center of the country and put my name on lists. I can get out there somewhat easily and the best I managed to do there was 3rd on the list for a Daytona, which honestly I was thrilled about until I learned it was that reps personal waitlist.

So yeah I think your brother was extremely lucky!

Just witnessed Rolex AD shithousery first hand. Me, have you any St St sports models? AD, yes if you buy this €33k white gold GMT you can walk away with either a Daytona, GMT or Skydweller of your choice. He then fetches them all out but no pictures allowed. That was Ideal jewellers in Costa Adeje, Tenerife.

Obviously, they can do whatever they want, but that sort of blatant extortion is really distasteful IMO.

My first thought is does this actually work? Second thought: What's your return policy?

I've got a deposit down on the new 300M Diver at my AD here in NZ. Previously, I had a deposit down on a no-date Submariner which I probably would have had either this month or next, but the crap I went through to make that happen was just painful. I then get an email from the AD I have the 300M deposit down at offering me the chance to look at the entire 2018 Rolex collection in store. If they can't sell me one, WHAT WAS THE POINT?
