You misunderstand. I meant in a wider context. I hear all the time from ADs, forums, IG, FB, that Rolex has some sort of internal issue and had to slow down but they will be shipping and filling orders “next month”. That’s been nearly 9 months now.

You also misunderstood my statement about it working for Rolex. How is it not working for them? They’re selling everything before it even gets to the case. Off the street buyers are forced to buy other things which it seems they’re doing because at my 2 ADs the shelves are bare.

Conditioning us to pay 2x and a massive price hike doesn’t sound plausible when you say it out loud eh?

I just said it out loud. Sounds entirely plausible: Rolex socially engineers their customer base to spend $10K on a submariner with a phony shortage and then raises MSRP to $10K. Customers accept new price as that was the going rate anyway.

I see no other reason to constrict supply. Their marketing had already made Rolex "the best watch" to just about every non-WIS on planet Earth.

I’ll set a 2 year calander reminder and revisit this then. That should be enough time

It is not that easy to ramp up production, and it is probably not even in their interest, short or long term. They do not want to overproduce like the Richemont group and don't forget that they are competing with their own used product on the 2dn hand market, so keeping an aura of exclusivity may be very important. If their current (and enormous) production is fully absorbed at full price, why change anything? Also maybe Tudor is being used as an entry level / more accessible brand.

This is a hot take. Very interesting.

Has anyone ever considered contacting Rolex directly?

You think Rolex would divulge its marketing and production strategy? 😉

I saw this new GMT in the window at the Rolex boutique in Italy today. I was told that it’s sold and the wait list is so long that they aren’t taking reservations.

That isn't a stainless sports watch, its an 18K white gold. The steel version is only available on the new version of super jubilee bracelet, the oyster bracelet is 18K WG. Ironically the gold version is cheaper now than the steel in street price terms.

Oops yes you’re right! I’m on the waiting list for the Daytona in England. I was told 7 years but when I paid cash for my 60th speedy it magically came down to 3 years. 2 more to wait now, however I’m not 100% convinced I’ll actually get the call.

I was yesterdey in a Rolex AD, no steel product in display exception some date just. Available only gold and white gold Daytona, Gmt master pepsi 4 years, steeleverose 3 years.
I was told that "eventually" they will give priority to their client if someone wants something.....

I was in several Rolex boutiques and AD's while on vacation last week in London and Paris. Not a stainless steel sports model to be found anywhere, but plenty of Datejusts and a few Milgauss models as well.

I'm still feeling very stupid for not jumping on the 18K white gold Pepsi my AD had for sale for $24,700 + tax this summer.

To pay it off I would simply have had to sell my GMT II BLNR and 42mm Polar Explorer II, plus 2 of my 4 Speedmaster Pros, and then my SMPc with extra bracelet, my orange Planet Ocean 2500 (keeping my POLMLE), and my Tudor Black Bay Red with extra bracelet, to have the VISA charges completely paid off before the next statement.

I only needed to wholesale the three divers, and get a fair used retail price on the 2 Rolex and 2 Speedies (not the #ST though). But I chickened out, and now I have too many watches and not enough Pepsi.

@larryganz for that kind of money you could get a gilt 1675. Having seen the white gold one yesterday I thought it was bland, no character to it at all for me.

Anyone here experience after buying a rolex watch from your local AD then they will call you few weeks after and will ask you if you want a SS model in stock? But bcoz its not time yet to get another crown you turn down the deal? This what happened to me after buying ym40 116622 blue dial my AD called me if I want sky dweller black dial but of course im not millionaire and just recently purchased one I turned down the offer. Now Im on the list to get the gmt master 2 batman and my AD said he will call me once it arrives. I was thinking that rolex are holding back some hot ss models in the backdoor safe and just waiting to decide to whom they will give the item.

Selling less watches only makes sense if retail prices go up, higher than secondary market.
This is a really strange situation.

I don’t think they are selling any less watches!! They are plenty of stainless steel sports models on the grey market selling for above MRSP . The ADs or boutiques are somehow selling them on to the grey markets..

I just wonder how much of a effect this demand for the Sports models is having on the Datejust and OP range.
