I would like to abuse this week’s Speedy Tuesday to do an educated guess on the novelty that Omega is going to present to us during BaselWorld (19th of March till the 26th of March). Almost every year, Omega introduces a limited or special edition Speedmaster to commemorate historical achievements of NASA where a Speedmaster was involved. For example, every five years, Omega introduces a Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI limited edition, to commemorate the moon landing in 1969. Last year, it was the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI 45th Anniversary edition (we covered it here), limited to 1969 pieces. So, […]

Hello Robert-Jan - I think your guess, and rationale are very logical and probable. I am looking forward to seeing what Omega brings to Basel this year!!

A 50th anniversary of the Ed White Spacewalk, based on the FOIS is another possibility.

First Speedmaster out of the capsule and all that.

I'll be very disappointed if they don't.
Highly unlikely I'd pick one up straight away. But would definitely be looking out for a secondhand one after a couple of years.

I'm thinking (hoping) along these lines as well.

I would love to see a gorgeous 105.003 reissue, on a well-done stainless steel bracelet that reflects the 1960s period bracelets. Say, a solid-link version of a 7912.

I think to further differentiate the 105.003 First Extravehicular Omega reissue from the FOIS/CK2998 reissue, a hesalite crystal would be wonderful as well.

Finally, I would love for Omega to reissue the Ω321 calibre. Preferably, in their everyday, 3570.50.00 current-production Speedmaster Professional.

Given that in 2012 President Urquhart stated in an interview that Omega's company direction is a move to entirely in-house coaxial movements for all their timepieces with the exception of the Speedmaster Professional which is to retain its classic hand wound movement due to its heritage and significance. . .if Omega is going to retain one movement that is unique and different. . .why not make it the true Ω321 movement that went to the moon?

Given the apparent higher manufacturing costs of the 321 it would give them the basis for increasing the price of the traditional speedmaster, so it doesn't end up being the entry level model in the range.

It'd be great but I can't see it. Happy to be wrong though!

I'd love to see it too! Actually, I think that would be consistent with Omega's overall move upmarket. If you go to the swatchgroup.com website, you'll note that Omega is under the "Prestige & Luxury" family of brands.

With regard to feasibility, a large number of parts are actually common between the 321 and 1861. There are some differences, such as the Ω321 being a column wheel chronograph, while the 1861 is a cam-and-shuttle. Differences in mfg costs would likely factor in to a price increase, which would come anyway, whether we want it or not. 😀

If they issue an Apollo 13 commemorative, I may have to buy one. By happenstance I met Jim Lovell in the summer of 1998 and spent an amazing and unforgettable morning with him, chatting over coffee about his experience and his book, "Lost Moon". What a humble guy ... And a true hero.
