My sleuthing skillz are rotten today (I am finding nothing)...however, the more I think, the louder the bell rings...

Alaska...

The Monza is pretty neat, and given the high contrast it makes sense that it's so eye-catching. If it is a unique piece, I'd think it'll blow past that estimate handily given the appeal.
Let's wait and see. There are major question marks over that and no extract will be possible since it seems the serial number has been filed off. The dial is no doubt legit, the rest?

Which is your favourite...

Taking a minority position here... I'd be all over the 2998-5. Looks rather honest and whilst it has its flaws, it's for its condition that it would be perfectly wearable, hence enjoyable, to me.

True. I made that post without realizing the serial was filed off. With that knowledge, I would personally value the lot as if I were bidding on a loose dial only.

filed off?

I understood Omega to simply not stamp them in the first place

There is another thread about this watch. The plate where the serial should sit has most likely been refinished since it has a different brush and sits lower than the bridges around it. Al looked at the close ups forensically and suggested this convincingly since he’s seen it before. There is a dating discrepancy also. The 1861 wasn’t seen until 1996 yet the dial seems earlier as is the date ascribed to the watch. It smells of a put together. You could be generous and suggest Omega filed it off themselves and used a plain case ( they often mark prototypes not for sale). The marks on the inner caseback might be useful to see in case they shed any light but it is noticeable they are not shown. The only evidence supporting this piece is an unseen email from the extract team saying that such a model was considered. Hardly convincing. It may be better to consider it an attractive mod with genuine parts rather than a unicorn prototype.

I love that handset of 2998-1. Lollipop + trangle lume is perfect match! Alaska will go for at least 500k, but my guess is close to a million.

Just to confirm - this is the ONLY Alaska II that has ever come up for private sale isn't it?

Great post and lots of useful Speedy background on your assessment for noobs like me, thanks a lot William!

Since not many replies to your three questions here are mine:

Which one do you think will go highest % over estimate? Soyuz, this is the one i am most certain
Do you think each will sell? Yes, too big of an auction house to not have at least an interested buyer
Which is your favourite... Alaska would be too much of a dream, wanting to keep it real i'd say 2998-1, i wish i adda nice pulsations bezel in my collection one day and a 2998-1 attached to it would be a great plus 🥰

best regards
Duccio

420k plus premium for the Alaska, I'm curious if any of those will be available in the future or it was one time for a life chance... 😀

I was one of the shocked underbidders in the room for the Alaska... It looked very nice in the hand, but I'm advised it has a few issues. Suprised at the extract. One definitely not to regret letting go. Congrats to the winner, glad it wasn't me!

That Monza 😲 About the same as a Paul Newman

Still, the AS was very under-valued 😀 and sold well. Expect to see a WTB 5.5mm pushers ad soon.

Wonderful write up as always William! While the Alaska will most likely take the cake here, I am such a sucker for the 2998s. Really like the lollipop hand of the 2988-1 but the 2998-5 is my favorite of the bunch.

The Monza dial is a beauty but there wasn't much to go on for authenticity. Had to scratch my head to think what t I'd do with it. Luckily not for long though as the bidding escalated! The OPs review is spot on, on this one: buy for beauty.

The 2998 popsicle is a bit of mess tbh. Nothing really matches.

A pretty strong showing for Omega. Maybe we'll see future estimates climb.

No kidding! 113,400chf for the Soyuz, I know the estimates were low but still that is a WOW! price IMO.
