Actually the fat lume hour hand seems to pop up on a few Lollipops (internet images not mine): Maybe the reason is an unusual hands spec and/or supplier for this batch of hands since the lollipop doesn't last all that long, to say the least? Why the whole handset is not always uniform on these lollipop models is probably just one of those vintage quirks where parts may have been used up at different rates or something like that. Personally I have always felt that making rules about the "correct" sequence of Alpha hands for this period a bit difficult as there seem to be a lot of small variations (excluding outright aftermarket/modern mods of course). YMMV. Best, T.
I don't think so, at that hammer price a dealer would be very hard pressed to make a profit on this one...
I do not think so, with that price it must have been a collector that wants to keep it. IMHO, to get a profit of it seems a bit hard...
Warning: "Do not attempt to sell your 2998s immediately just because of this outstanding result. It will only flood the market and cause the market price unsustainable but to dive down."
Got it and thanks. I dont think anyone else here could have figured that out. It's no problem if I dump all my Ed Whites, is it?
Also, most 2998's are probably not quite a special as this one. It's funny how we all freak out about a superlative example of one of the world's most iconic watches being sold for over $100k when what I see as a tacky, over-the-top, tasteless diamond-studded gold midget sells for $5 million, and everyone applauds. I love that Omega watches sing to me - I get to lust after quasi-realistic-and-one-day-maybe-possibly-attainable watches rather than bloated status symbols like this: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/bao-dai-phillips-most-expensive-rolex-ever-sold I think there is a tonne - and I mean quite literally a metric tonne - of upwards movement potentially available in the price of special Speedmasters. To me, the iconic qualities of the Submariner/Daytona/President are matched or bested by the design and quality of the early Speedmasters. Will the best/rarest Speedys ever sell for a price point close to a Rolex Milsub or gilt-dial Submariner? Probably not, but to me, the best Speedy's are no less worthy from a design/historical standpoint. If you're starting a serious watch collection, you won't regret starting with a Sub, an Explorer, a Daytona and a Speedmaster. There are many others that deserved to be on the above list, but in my one-bottle-of-wine-and-one-more-to-go state, those four are the must-own watches that come to mind TLDR: Speedmasters are a freaking bargain compared to their iconic/legendary counterparts
I was present at the auction and the winner of this watch was from telephone bid and it sounded like the person spoke english with the person on the other side of the phone. I have also seen the watch IRL and it's a hell of a watch!
its the way I bid. Wait for all the minows to eat each other then you only have one other shark to beat. But in this case, it wasn't me.
