Greetings!

It is finally Friday, with an upcoming Afterwork,
so why not start the weekend with an auction report!??

The reference 2998 (and 2915) have been very hard (for me) to find on auctions,
and when they do come up,
I always start my research, and the never ending studies!
::facepalm2::

The one that I followed this time was a 2998-62, so a late 2998.
Serial nr 18.49 mil, that would be correct for this ref, around 1963.

No history regarding ownership, service etc.

No Professional text and Swiss Made at the bottom and a stepped dial.
And as usual - the condition of the dial was a bit hard to assess, but promising.
Could it maybe have a small small tint of brown...???

The lumeplots were missing, very dirty and tired, not attractive at all.
And the hands…
Wrong, and replaced, and painted…
The DON bezel looked ok, so good minus.
The movement was nice, but in need for a service.

The case was of course polished, some definition but no brushing.
With scratches and marks.
But here are one of the harder parts to assess - how much can you/we accept??
I have seen much worse, but also very nice ones....

The caseback looked nice compared to the rest of the watch.
The crown was incorrect, and the pushers looked old, so they could be original.

And following @Spacefruit - Do you like the watch chart,
this one came very low on the chart.

So not a candidate for me, but always fun to learn,
and also to follow the auction!

The estimate was 8000 - 10000 € / 8700 - 10900 $ plus the 25 % premium.

And when it was time for the bidding - no interest whatsoever!!
I wasn't even tempted to bid at his level….

After some time, a person on the floor gave a bid att 7500 € / 8200 $,
and that was that - so the hammer went down at 9375 €/ 10200 $ including the premium.

This would set the value following Speedmaster101 to a little bit over fair.

But there is a lot of work before the watch is correct, and also the condition of the case…
And of course - the condition of the dial??

What are your thoughts??

Poor thing. It's not even fitted to a matching strap (20mm instead of 19).

Other than that, I think you've summed it up nicely. I'm actually surprised someone paid nearly 10k for this. To me, it's really only a collection of parts, possibly with a reasonable dial, albeit with unattractive lume plots.

Totally agree with you!
This watch didn't send any good vibes.
I am a bit curious what other Speedy fans think about it?
It is the condition of the case that makes me uncertain?
I have found a couple of threads here were Forum members compare and show 2998:s, but it is really hard to set a value...

And maybe a sidetrack here…but don't go to an Afterwork thinking that a beer or two is enough and then time to go home!!
:D

This is one of the watches that sits in a void for me. None of the individual parts are particularly attractive so I just can’t find any enthusiasm for it. I can see why some might find pleasure in owning it, but I couldn’t. Plus 10k does seem a lot for this.

Hard to believe someone would pay so much for an example with so many “stories”.
