Hi Forum Friends!

I normally post my Speedy auctions after the sale, but this watch is so weird and a true Frankenwatch,
so I wanted to warn some potential novice buyer (that hopefully reads this…),
and also share with the rest of you of course!

It is stated as a 2998-1, with 100% original parts….🙁

Here is a link to the auction:
https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/88529321-omega-speedmaster-2998-1-unisex-1960-1969

The ”Expert” has an estimate of 20000-22000 €!
And somebody has already placed a bid.

Looking at the pictures, there could not be many original 2998-1 parts.

The movement could be for a 2998-1, but the rest??

I found at least 6 parts (the hands count as one…) that are not correct for this reference, but the most obvious one is the dial.
And the caseback must be a fake/rebranded one!

Enjoy the pictures, and please do comment!

The caseback is especially weird. How was that done?

They must have polished down the original ref, and then stamped a new one?
Comparing to a true original, there are som difference in the "polish paterns".

I think they would have filled in the old stamping, turned or machined that area and then stamped. The stamping are quite deep, and that would be a lot of material to remove.

Or is that what you meant?

Looks like one of the rare occasions or see a repainted speedmaster dial

Let's hope that the current bidder reads this post including someone at Catawiki.

Wow. I am about as non expert as anyone here, and I started shaking my head as soon as I saw the first picture. This is ridiculous, even by Catawiki standards.

Erwin’s only target is turnover. At CW the level of knowledge of the experts is - judging by what they auction - not much higher than ‘pretty basic’

I guess the question is, what is the value of the parts?

How does the CW search function work ??
It must have some automatic safety guard for junk watches because If i enter ; omega+2998 , it gives no results. And Speedmaster+2998 gives 194 results so it is burrried somewhere in there. It will not find many buyers this way, a good thing !
