This sold at an auction house close to me this week for £2,300 + fees, I had just won an earlier lot so ended up the underbidder due to budget restraints. The dial looked really nice under the crazed crystal and it was running. The case and bezel has had a life for sure but I like a watch with a bit of 'character' shall we say. Anyway, I am very happy with the watch I bought but this still keeps popping in my head......bloody watches! Thought I would post here for interest and to hopefully, get it out of my head.

A -76 with a stepped dial? And those pushers looks a bit short or is it me ?

Anyway that’s a lot of wrist cheese for that price, great buy 👍

And what was the earlier lot?

I am certainly no expert on the foibles of Speedmasters but to me, that doesn't look like a watch that has been messed around with much....lol

The other lot was a military watch I will post in the military watch thread soon when it comes back from service and clean, it also had more than it's fair share of wrist detritus, but is all original.

Given the amount of DNA on that watch, the new owner should be able to clone the previous owner and get a first-hand history of the watch.

With 25% fees, that would make a 2875 £ / 3360 € buy. Add 400€ of service, and you have a step dial speedmaster for 3800€. At that price, I’d live with the flaws that are seeable on the pics.

Very good buy IMHO… Eager to hear other thoughts thought.

only a 400€ service? That sounds on the light side. New crystal needed, plus with what was likely many years of neglect movement parts could be needed.

Since when would a '76 have a step dial? Until 2021, the last step dial Speedmaster Professional was the 1971 145.022.

I like the pictures, are revealing the life of the watch without any discounts

@BlackTalon

From pics on my smartphone, movement looks to be in pretty good condition. But might be my phone, might be my eyes, might be both…

No service markings inside the caseback, but the gasket looks new and it looks like it's pretty clean. Wear could be another story, though.

The movement serial was 39184972, as I mentioned I am not particularly informed on speedster dials but according to I Love my Speedmaster it specifically says a -74 is non step but doesn't say as such for a -76, or am I reading the page incorrectly?

If it’s a 1976 145.022, it would not have a step dial unless the original dial was swapped out for a dial from an earlier model (unlikely) or it’s a production anomaly (very unlikely). As I said in my earlier post, prior to the introduction of the new Speedmaster Professional in 2021, the last step dial model was the 1971 145.022. I have owned a 1976 in the past and it is not a step dial model.

@gbesq I don't doubt that you are correct. It is definitely a step dial, I had it in hand and inspected with a loupe, and is 145022-76 (no dot). It is indeed a mystery how a dial from at least 5 years earlier ended up in the watch. This isn't helping me to push the watch from my mind....😕, but at least I am spreading the burden..lol.

Who knows? 😕 Anything is possible!

With that much dna I would expect a goopy looking gasket…not a fresh looking one…but maybe they don’t all turn to goop…
