This is a noob tax watch. photos are not good enough for me to be accurate, so bear in mind:

It’s not a bad watch but It’s not very good, most would want a watch better in many areas, especially for the money

the dial looks a bit tired, and may have light decay - photos can’t be sure. Hands maybe too. Not wrong, or bad, just not especially nice. the bezel correct, and nice.

case probably polished.

the movement is actually dirty, which is a poor reflection on the seller, who has watchmakers on site.

it’s a typical WBAW speedmaster. It looks “ok” but it is overpriced. My friend tells me they can be good for Rolex, both buying no selling, but I have no experience with that.

while it is too expensive, it would be more interesting to hear what people would pay for this.

for instance even the most grumpy “I only buy perfect watch“ members would surely pay $2,500?

so that gives us a floor . - would anyone bid more in an open auction, in today’s times?

....and if you come on an post that this is simply not good enough for you, then you are missing the point and wasting bytes (we already know)

more valuable to hear actual numbers

£2000 would be my number. Not a penny more.

I'd be happy at that price I could improve it slightly, have a reasonable daily wearer and pass it on quickly without much of a loss if I decided to.

Some additional pics on the bay

As a $3k watch - I’d be tempted to swap out the case, replace the modern 1171/1, put it for a full clean service and be reasonably happy with it.

Interesting. The seller has 4 feedback ratings and only as a buyer. I wonder how WBAW feels about people using their copyrighted photos to resell a watch.

It does seem a little off base doesn’t it. As was noted above this particular watch doesn’t seem to be on the WBAW site..
Caveat emptor?

I communicated with the seller who responded he's owned the watch 6-7 years and originally purchased it from WBAW.

So he is offering a watch based on 6 year old photos....No chance of that ending badly then.

Unless you desire a ‘71 as a birth year watch, you can easily move on as the experts have advised.

From the pictures.... not assumptions of what it looks like now. With a modern 1171/1 and a quite good DNN I'd put the package at USD 3,250-3,550. But I think with hunting you can find a more attractive dial and hand set out there in a 71 for the same price. Additionally you have to subtract the big service it needs. If it did not need a service I would give it a few hundred more. To me the years 71-78 dial and hands are the most important as they are the most expensive parts that massively affect the way the watch look. Then you look at the bezel and case combo. The case on this one is ok... nothing special. Good bezel though.. actually a great DNN.

But at the end of the day the unattractive dial and hands would make me pass, for one with a better dial and hands, and worse bezel with no bracelet at 3,500.

Just out of curiosity, what makes that dial and hands so unattractive? Because on the wristshots from the Ebay listing i don´t think it´s that bad. Of course i also think it is overpriced but at 3k i still think that would be a very good deal. I haven´t seen a Speedy (from 71) for 2-3k for quite some time but then again maybe i don´t search the right spots or platforms.

mossy and uneven lume. You want solid amber or greenish white on these. You also want the hands to match (ie the hand lume will only appear slightly darker)

My friend tells me they can be good for Rolex, both buying no selling, but I have no experience with that.

They fall quite short of the mark on Rolex pieces in so far as condition, correctness and provenance. Archived watches show dials that are on wrong cases etc but some of these older dealers have been long dragging bad habits from the late 80s and 90s where you could easily cobble a watch together (much like this speedy) and sell as original. There are buyers that don’t know much so they still have a market but google, forums, books etc are the enemy.

That,s a hell lot of money for an average watch. If you chime on forums I'm sure you can do better for the same price,
