I really hope the OP has PM'd @Spacefruit to thank him for his detailed assessment because there has been no public acknowledgement for the assistance 😉

I think that California's state sales tax is actually closer to 7%, but obviously various jurisdictions have additional taxes. How much does eBay charge you? Check it out for yourself.

I live in the Los Angeles area and ebay charges 9.5%, I just checked a previous purchase.

Four states - Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon - have no statewide sales tax, or local sales taxes, either.
Explains why a lot of Californians have moved up to Oregon.

Well, it's still a small amount compared to typical VAT. Just very complicated due to the US emphasis on local government.

25% in Sweden 😉
Wasn't there also extra taxation applicable on sugar and alcohol in Sweden?

You might mix Sweden with Norway
I think we are “best in class” when it comes to taxes in tobacco, alcohol and general vat (25%)

In the UK we pay duty on the alcohol content and then VAT on top -- and that includes VAT on the duty!

So for the Aussie bottle of wine I've just opened ~48% of the price is "tax". For a bottle of The Glenlivet whisky total tax is ~39% of the price. Almost makes me want to give up drink 🙄
