·I would leave the engravings as it is and leave it up to your husband to decide if it needs a fresh up.

Nice little write-up: https://strapcode.wordpress.com/202...seamaster-chronometre-354-is-a-true-treasure/
Thats really great, thank you. Cant share it with husband yet as its all still a big surprise..but know he will pour over that when I give him.the watch in May.
Really helpful to see the watch with different straps too. Im definitely going for a shiny brown crocodile skin leather type one .
Again am I best buying online or taking it somewhere? Prices seem to go from.the sublime to the ridiculous, but don't want to let it down with a strap not befitting it .

Just so the OP understands. Proper case refinishing is a highly specialized skill, and usually involves significant expense. A typical jeweler or watchmaker who offers to polish the watch might ruin the case by crude polishing on a buffing wheel. So this is not something to be taken lightly, especially because it's irreversible.
Straps can cost a huge amount of money for high quality, handmade ones. Imo they shouldn’t cost a significant proportion of the value of the watch.
In the UK I’d recommend WatchObsession and Watch Gecko for decant quality straps at a reasonable price.
So I'm sure you're all sick to the backteeth of people joining the forum and asking the same questions time and time again...but never let it be said I don't follow the crowd !!
My husband ( aged 60 ) was given his dads old watch, years & years ago...its been sat in its box in my bedside cabinet for all that time.
I'd like to get it serviced and working for his birthday in May as a surprise.
So questions..from the photos alone does anyone have a vague clue as to how old it is ? ( I dont dare take the back off to get the number).
How much roughly does a service cost..no idea if it needs a repair or not at this stage?
Whilst there is sentimental value in paying to get it going , I cant justify spending say a gazillion pounds on a watch that's worth only £2.50 say.
Sorry the photos are a bit pants..its a good job im a nurse not a photographer !!!
Thanks for any help
