I would leave the engravings as it is and leave it up to your husband to decide if it needs a fresh up.

Exactly, it can always be done later but it can't be undone.

So watch is now with Mitka. (thanks for the advice and reassurance re transportation).

He has started working on it and sent me a few photos.

Are you able to identify the watch and give me more information about it from the photos I've added ?

Thanks

Sam

1954 by the serial number shown there.

Nice little write-up: https://strapcode.wordpress.com/202...seamaster-chronometre-354-is-a-true-treasure/

Thats really great, thank you. Cant share it with husband yet as its all still a big surprise..but know he will pour over that when I give him.the watch in May.

Really helpful to see the watch with different straps too. Im definitely going for a shiny brown crocodile skin leather type one .

Again am I best buying online or taking it somewhere? Prices seem to go from.the sublime to the ridiculous, but don't want to let it down with a strap not befitting it .

My only minor disagreement with the prevailing sentiment here is re: case polishing. If he is concerned about resale, I completely agree. If he plans on keeping, (and I suspect he will) I think that is completely up to your hubby. If he wants it to look new, and if it is done well, it should retain its sharp edges. Check out some of the work by Tanner Morehouse.

Just so the OP understands. Proper case refinishing is a highly specialized skill, and usually involves significant expense. A typical jeweler or watchmaker who offers to polish the watch might ruin the case by crude polishing on a buffing wheel. So this is not something to be taken lightly, especially because it's irreversible.

Might be worth seeing if mitka has anything suitable? Kill 2 birds with one stone?

Exotic skin straps (like crocodile) will generally cost a bit more than even nice leather straps. Of course, many of the straps in that article are calf leather embossed with a pattern. Sometimes they are pretty stiff and cheap feeling, TBH.

I'm going to wait and see what comes from the servicing, I put in the info you all advised re what I wanted doing but I've asked him to just inspect it first as not sure yet if it needs any repair doing to it and what that might cost.

Does Mitka do watch straps too then ? Be great if he could do it whilst he has it..I've no idea what size I'd have to look for even. Remember you're speaking to a woman who hasn't owned a watch in nearly 4 decades!!

Just ask @kaplan and @gbesq in their debate over case refinishing ... It can become quite controversial! 😁

So not a chance in hell husband would ever even dream of selling his dads watch, especially when.he could actually wear it but how would i get a valuation for it? ..

would i need to get it insured separately or would it fall under the general household insurance ?

Got some leather restoration creme and gave the box a gentle clean ( it was minging) and some tlc. Its come up great.

Going to buy a cushion for inside now..does it just lie on it or do I need a plastic insert thing for it to sit on ?

Gotta check with your homeowner's insurance company and specific policy allowances.

Mine is basically anything has a $1000 deductible, so anything under that is a wash anyway. Anything over $1k but under $10k can be listed and named specifically (my Cartier Roadster, for example). Anything over $10k has to be evaluated by a watchmaker/jeweler with a "formal replacement value estimate" given with photos, etc.

The box would originally have had a flat insert, with an indent for the watch head and a slit for one half of the strap to slide into.
Unfortunately these are often lost or discarded and are impossible to find.

However, you could find/make a small pillow to hold the watch - like this one.

Straps can cost a huge amount of money for high quality, handmade ones. Imo they shouldn’t cost a significant proportion of the value of the watch.
In the UK I’d recommend WatchObsession and Watch Gecko for decant quality straps at a reasonable price.

I'm not sure that I’ve ever appreciated the difference between a watch strap of £20 or less and one of £80 or more. Bracelets I do understand but leather - not sure I get it.

So I'm sure you're all sick to the backteeth of people joining the forum and asking the same questions time and time again...but never let it be said I don't follow the crowd !!

My husband ( aged 60 ) was given his dads old watch, years & years ago...its been sat in its box in my bedside cabinet for all that time.

I'd like to get it serviced and working for his birthday in May as a surprise.

So questions..from the photos alone does anyone have a vague clue as to how old it is ? ( I dont dare take the back off to get the number).

How much roughly does a service cost..no idea if it needs a repair or not at this stage?

Whilst there is sentimental value in paying to get it going , I cant justify spending say a gazillion pounds on a watch that's worth only £2.50 say.

Sorry the photos are a bit pants..its a good job im a nurse not a photographer !!!

Thanks for any help
This message could be pinned to serve as a model for visitors who are making their first what’s-this-worth post. A friendly self-introduction and a generous sharing of information and images goes a long way.

This is shaping up to be a blockbuster surprise present, planned well in advance and proceeding apace. The serviced watch with a polished crystal (but with the case left as is) and a nice strap is going to look like a million dollars and additionally remind your husband that he hit the jackpot when he married you.
