Some Thoughts On The Forum Main Page Layout Re-Marketplace

The problem with most people is that they are simply too lazy to just click-and-explore. It’s literally 2 clicks to any sales forum (or sub forum)from the landing page or any page. One to open the menu/link-page, another to click the desired sub forum. Anything else is half the number of clicks…which is still too much for most folks. Maybe in 20 years when OF will be frequented by the kids of today who grew up with mobile phones this Problem will be gone 😉

I tried using my PC once... on a 37 inch screen the photos, outside of watch photos that is, were huge and off-putting with detail.
My nostrils, dust covered lenses of my glasses, unshaven mug and non-goo'd hair were too much for even me to look at on 37 inches of screen.
Evidence ~
I think the nose is easily explainable.

I detest drop-in anons who don't take the time to offer jackshit about themselves or contributions

True that. Much better when esteemed members contribute unshaven-ungroomed selfies. 😁

Yea I’m fairly certain it won’t change behaviors much, we have added text on thread creation in the past too and nobody ever read it no matter how clear we made it. Its not the end of the world, people have been asking about watches since the start of the site and it always spikes a bit just after Christmas particularly among people new to watches, I try to jump on as many as I can to aid them but if you don’t feel like helping someone just ignore it rather than posting something snarky and let others reply or let it drop down the latest list.

Yea I suppose I was just thinking out loud with this. A stream of consciousness sort of post like most of my contributions on the forum. ::facepalm1::

BTW Ash I lost that link to the writing program for the "Omega Stories" section. I tried PMing you but it probably got lost among the more important messages you get. 😁

Right there with ya, Ash.
I think if there would be any header we should have this for the veteran members and not the newbie

Yea it really is very cyclical, at Christmas a LOT of people get gifted watches, including fake watches by family members and friends, some are ok, many are redialed or junk. Then following Christmas people have big credit card bills to discharge and it stimulates a lot of watch selling which in turn leads to a lot of deals being done.

We see the spike every year and about 20-30% of those guys end up being long term members with a genuine interest in watches which is great, even the guys who get given a redial or a fake get so into it that they want to find a good watch instead.

But yea we were all new to this at one point and we all received a helping hand from someone, myself included so anyone willing to be that helping hand is much appreciated.

Perhaps the privilege to buy from the "private watch sales" section should be earned (50 posts minimum or something like that) rather than given. And so maybe it's actually a good thing that you have to spend a little bit of time on OF before you can find it. You see so many good deals in the PWS section and sometimes it makes you hope that the watch being sold at a bargain goes to someone who will really be able to appreciate it. I've passed on some watches that could have been flipped in a minute for a profit but it just didn't feel right to buy it on OF from a generous collector just to make a quick buck. My point is that it's not a marketplace like FB, eBay, Reddit and the likes. It's a little more than that.

That is the beauty of it !
No better values than the off-casts of seasoned collectors culling their collections or changing focus.
I haven't seen a problem but I am receptive to persuasion.

Interesting. I was wondering if, lately, there was an unusually high number of new people asking for valuations on deceased relatives' watches and/or in a hurry to buy totally roached Connies.

I'm relatively new and clueless myself so I tend not to hop into those threads. I agree it's annoying... But I figure it's better to err on the side of encouraging new people to get excited about watches?

You can be helpful and snarky at the same time if you word it just right.

How about a WTT only section?

Yes, we can trade now using the FS section so no new capability.

The main reason is that many of us have watches we have fallen out of love with but don't want to go through the hassle of selling. But we would be happy to swap, just like we used to do with our marbles, baseball cards, comic books or whatever. A WTT only section might encourage collectors to freshen their collection. As of now, any WTT items are buried in the FS section.

Another thought would be to move all sold items into a separate category. But only if it doesn't involve a lot of manual work.

No, I am not volunteering to help.😁

The long-time trend is newly signed up members asking about an Omega they spotted somewhere on the net for sale and warned off as the majority of those watches are sub-par, to outright rip offs/frankens. Often times myself and other members post a suggestion for the new member to browse our own for-sale marketplace to have a better chance of buying something legit and priced reasonable.

Now of course there are decent watches for sale anywhere on the net if one is savvy, but why are these new members unaware of our own marketplace until they are told? Then it is like a revelation. This happens so often that there must be some subtle way to inform newly signed up members that there is a marketplace section. I know this site is not primarily a sales forum, but perhaps if there was some sort of heading on the main page that indicated a for sale section, it might be of service to new collectors who have come across our forum. Nothing tacky, just something to clue in new members who might be too excited to dive into the discussion sections with questions that they haven't scrolled completely down the forums sections list.

Many of us members sporadically post stuff for sale, and not many of us are in the reselling business so it's not imperative for the watches to go quickly. I myself just started popping a few on here for sale a couple months ago after over a year of not posting anything for sale online. Mostly we members list watches as they start to clutter up and are not being used, or to turn the cash into another watch. I think it would be beneficial for both seasoned members and new members alike if the marketplace section was listed in a way that the majority of new members spot it without needing to be enlightened. These newbies will surely benefit from safer dealings.

Thoughts? 😀
Beginning my 3rd year on OF and it took a while to figure out the marketplace sections- but the time and research involved was important to get a feel for what other members thought about sellers etc so if you shortcut the process for new members to figure things out it makes it easier for them to benefit without the effort of research that is so valued on OF. So I would vote to leave it unchanged.
The dealers sale section gets overwhelmed by the same dealer posting pages of listings and appear to unfairly dominate that section. Not sure the best remedy for that however.

I sometimes wish price was required in the title so that I could easily scroll through for things in my price range. I look at most of them anyway because I like seeing awesome watches but catching something in my budget is hard at times when the price is buried in the description.

But then you wouldn’t be inspired to open the link and fall in love after you see the pictures. I do wish some sellers would at least put it at the top of the listing in bold as I have had to read descriptions multiple times to find the price buried in the text.

To my mind eye that photo of you is like looking at Sean Lock once of the funniest blokes ever.

Haha like I said, I do still look at most listings. I just don’t always have time to dive in so it would be nice to quickly scroll and see if anything new fits the budget 😀
