Added a little color to the skin diver collection recently. Neither run ( ::facepalm1:: ) which is why I’m selling one or two that do. First was this Lucerne which looks great, esp with the roulette date:

Its “lifetime mainspring” made it 50-60 years.

And the other one, well, my blue Cronel has done the unthinkable - it multiplied!!! 😲

Same 40mm case as the blue, but with a slightly more versatile color scheme.
Nicely done. Great dial. You just need a tropical one now 😉

How about a full set Timex Skin Diver?!

Awesome skindiver collection! These Timex skindivers are one of the models I want so badly, but can't wear because they're too small 🙁 I suppose I can make do with my 1st-execution Red Ball with the black-base hands.

I actually found a gold-plated version of the Cronel too, and would have gone for it but it was missing its bezel lol

The Timex wear as a good size though, that model was 36mm without the crown and had 19mm lugs. So it really was on par with a lot of these other watches.

I do have an insert indeed 😀

It’s a really nice collection you have there 👍

Haha, touché. You're lucky that you have the 1-piece bezel version. not sure why they changed them to be the 2 piece design.

Great looking watches when they are complete!!

Yeah, I have a large wrist though so the smallest I can go is 36mm without bezel, or 37mm with a very slim bezel. The Timex skindiver would look silly small on my wrist :/

Hard to know where to draw the line between skin divers and professional divers. But here is a little grouping of watches that might be skin divers.

Hard to know where to draw the line between skin divers and professional divers.

Professional divers often had a screw-down crown and unidirectional bezel, but at the very least case features that enable a deeper water resistance. A skindiver looks like a dive watch, but generally had bidirectional timing bezels with less WR (~50-100m) and were more of a budget choice for vacationers and occasional hobbyists.

In principle that sounds good, but I have many skin divers with screw down crowns, and some watches with bidirectional bezels that are clearly professional divers by any measure (military issue dive watch, 1000m depth rating, etc.). I think the boundaries are pretty blurry.

More of a perception than reality, perhaps based on price in their day.

Yeah, to me it feels more like a price difference. Skin divers had look and feel of diver but were less expensive when initially sold.

Very blurry. I kind of just place any watch that isn't a Compressor/Super Compressor or has a rating of 1000M into the skin diver category (with some exceptions, Rolex Sub isn't a skin diver...).

I think aesthetics have something to do with it, too. There's a "look" that skin divers have. Even if they are up for a deeper dive, they look like something that was worn for less intense stuff.

I recently purchased this "skindiver" on a Kickstarter program.

Neil Armstrong's Brother's watch 😉.

Great looking watches, can still find the originals for cheap too if you keep an eye out.

I think you're on the right track. What about these two? Not super compressors and not 1000m, yet both feel like professional divers to me, with no decompression bezels. I definitely think the Doxa is a professional diver, given its history. And obviously some of the later Super Kontiki watches were military issued (IDF) dive watches. I think any military issued dive watch is definitely in the professional category, like the Benrus 50717 types.

Yes sir, that's it. I love the picture of the X-15 on the back of it.

And finally, a Caravelle Sea hunter with the "Tudor" dial. If someone has an insert, pleases let me know!!!

Check out the sizes of Seiko inserts. You might get lucky and it's better than a missing original. 😁

Uh oh, my favorite category.

Did someone say Tropic straps? Had a few NOS ones not too long ago, kept one for myself:

How about a full set Timex Skin Diver?!

Titus Calypsomatics, Sharing the case with the Monvis from @rootbeer7

And a custom Albino one I've put together

The skindiver version of the Croton Depthmaster:

Waltham Electronic with a Lip R148 inside

A classic Enicar Diver

A Funky as hell Belforte:

And finally, a Caravelle Sea hunter with the "Tudor" dial. If someone has an insert, pleases let me know!!!

This is the insert you'll be looking for.

What do you mean "Tudor" dial with yours?

Here is one that feels like a classic example of skin diver. Perhaps supported by the fact that it was retailed by the now defunct dive brand “Sportsways”. This is their Mariner model and would have likely been from 1960-61.

This Aquastar 63 to me isn’t really a skindiver. I think it sort of builds on the concept of skin diver versus professional diver. It is rated to 200m but does not feature a screw down crown. It was previously pawned by a navy salvage diver, so certainly professional in nature.

I don't think the screw-down crown is a determining virtue of "pro-divers", many deep depth rated watches didn't feature a screw-down crown, including all of the EPSA SC's. The Zodiac Seawolf immediately comes to mind which predated the heralded Submariner as a real diver.
