I’m not sure where you’ve heard that. One of the guiding principles was always “buy the watch and survive off beans and instant noodles for a couple of months!”.

·I'm not sure I'd make an expensive watch purchase while unemployed, but I agree with previous posters that it really depends on your financial position. It's certainly not something I'd do if it would mean taking on any extra interest or causing some stress on other finances.

·The watch looks good. I don’t think we were provided enough information to judge whether this was a good idea. Being out of work for 2 years by itself is only one small piece of information…. Maybe he has a lot of savings and assets.

·So thanks again for all the replies. I have the watch nearly three weeks now, and there hasn't been a day yet where I have felt any pangs of regret (or worn another watch). That said, there is one aspect of the ownership experience that may be a let-down for some, so I thought it was worth sharing.
For context I am on the forum today because I am going to put my Gen. 1 FOIS up for sale. It's a watch I haven't worn since early 2019, so selling it was always on the cards. I’ve also gone on record here that the watch has legibility issues. And one thing I discovered about my preference is that I really value being able to read the time on a watch; and to do so quickly without squinting and wrist-angling gymnastics.
Because of that, obtrusive dial clutter is off off-putting for me. This watch, like most Speedmasters' has three sub-dials - but this is a two tone face (Blue and Silver), and within that there is the nine o'clock "Snoopy" sub-dial also with two tones (Blue and white). It sounds messy, and when you consider the hands are also two tone, it is undeniably busy a certain times of day.
I have attached a picture of 4 Omega watches ranked from left to right by legibility. If you stand back from your screen I think you'll see what I am getting at. The FOIS and the Snoopy 50th sometimes require a certain amount of squinting to read the time. In my experience the FOIS requires squinting almost all the time. However, unlike the FOIS I find myself far more forgiving of the Snoopy’s legibility quirks, simply because it’s just undeniably gorgeous on the wrist.
You could put the Planet Ocean on the moon and I could read the time instantly from my garden on earth.

I put my name down years ago. I'm told by Weirs in Dublin just now that the Silver Snoopy 50th Anniversary Edition Speedy has "finally" started coming in. They say they can expect "about two a year". I can come see/buy "mine" tomorrow.
An important personal consideration is I was made redundant just over two years ago. I'm still unemployed. However, I am reasonably comfortable in the short term because of the redundancy payoff. That comfort will not last another year.
So here is what I am thinking right now: I am gonna buy the bloody thing. Furthermore I am going to wear the bloody thing.
But are there older wiser heads here to tell me I'm being an idiot? Is the watch shite?
I will of course consult the other half before I decide fully.

My OmegaForums account was compromised last month. I just got control of it back today. A scammer took control and was responding to adverts (mostly on April 22nd) looking to scam people. I have not posted, commented or messaged anyone since at January 15th. If you were corresponding with this account since then my sincere apologies.
It looks like the mods caught the scammer in time, blocked this account, and from the messages I can see, it looks like no real damage was done. Still, it was very careless security on my part. My sincere apologies to the mods for the inconvenience and any upset caused.
In happier news I got a job a month or so after I bought the Snoopy. So I am back being a responsible adult with too many watches.
