Should I Sell My Black Bay 58?

Hi everyone,

First post and looking for some advice - I bought the Black Bay 58 Black earlier this year and love it. I was deciding between the Black Bay and the Speedmaster Professional Hesalite. I know they are very different but I really like both. I chose the Black Bay because in my opinion it’s more durable as a daily wearer for me - I have two young kids who are always jumping on me/banging into my watch… Maybe I am wrong about durability, but I chose the Black Bay. My dilemma is this - I was planning to buy the Speedmaster in the next couple of years, but now with the 1861 (rumored to be) on its way out, should I sell the Black Bay and buy the outgoing Speedmaster while I can? Or just keep the Black Bay and buy the new Spedmaster at some point down the road? Thanks for your help.

I faced the same dilemma myself, plumping for the Speedmaster over the black bay.

Purely guessing, but as long as there's Omega, there'll be a Speedmaster pro, not sure I can say the same about Tudor and their black bay.

Call me suspicious, but I think the black bay, specifically the 58 will become more sought after in later years.

I get it. I would probably be more comfortable abusing the BB.
However the Speedy is plenty durable. The only downside, which I am sure you are aware of, is the hesalite scratches easy. But it is also an easy fix with a quick polish.
Other than that I have no qualms wearing the Speedy on Dad duty. But it's not going out on the boat or to the beach, where as I probably wouldn't think twice about wearing the BB during those activities.
I'm in the opposite boat though, I have the Speedy and WANT the BB, but there is no way I'm getting rid of the Speedy.
If you can, have both, if you can't, stick with the BB if you want a watch that you feel is more durable.
If you MUST have the speedy, sell the BB for now and maybe down the road you can pick up another one.
At this point, it seems that the BB will always be less expensive than the Speedy.

I have both and both I don’t wear on dad duty (I like that expression, thanks @vbrad26 )... so they are both sitting in my box waiting for quieter days.

That being said, I love them both. They are both perfect in their way. I wouldn’t want to give one away. So it doesn’t even matter which you get or keep first, in the long run you should have both! But no one know what time will bring for the Speedmaster and the BB, maybe you like the potential new speedie even more? I would just keep the BB and safe for a Moonwatch.

It's a tough call. Something special about the Speedmaster on the wrist. Enjoy it. Appreciate your thoughts.

Nothing better than Dad duty 😀 True, it is nice to be able to wear to the pool/beach and not have to worry about it...

You're right, I do want both... Thanks for the advice.

Honestly, keep the BB. The speedies will be available later on. Either the new model if you like that or pre-owned 1861.

i’ve had both 58’s (still got the blue) and they are great watches for most activities.

Lucky enough to own both watches and not planning on departing with either one. They are both unique in the own right. I would try to keep both if funds are available. You won't be sorry

Speedmaster all the way, wear mine like it’s stolen and don’t have a issue. Freshly serviced and ready for pool duty and torrential rain this wet season.
Sell the Tudor as you will later on when you buy a Rolex Sub in the future. 😉

I'd sell the kids to buy the Speedmaster now, double win situation, both watches and no more worrying about damage.

I have both watches. My BB58 Blue is in great shape and I try keep it that way. I abuse the knickers off my Moonwatch and wear it doing everything, it's already got quite a few scratches and scrapes including the hesalite. I feel I am building the character of my watch so every new ding and bump is fine as far as I am concerned. Just handed the speedy over for its first full service with strict instructions to not polish anything including the hesalite and to keep the hands, crown and pushers original if possible.

Congrats, I wear my Speedmaster everywhere. It’s only a year or two old (NIB 2005 I think) and it’s not beaten up but it is a daily watch for me. It’s the perfect size, fits comfortably, and the design is classic. I did try on a BB at the AD, I loved it, the action of the bezel is unbeatable. But, it’s not a Moonwatch.

The only one who can really answer this question is you. What do you like? What makes you happy?
Personally, I would sell any Tudor for a Speedmaster (or Seamaster). Tudor watches are well made but they are not speaking to me.
You can't go wrong with a watch from any respectable brand really, the only thing that matters is what you like on your wrist the most. There will always be a Speedy pro, and Tudors very successful BlackBay collection won't disappear anytime soon. Good luck with your choice!

If I had to pick one it would be the Speedmaster.
If you worry about abusing it get a daily Seiko.

Get both. Keep the Tudor and save for a Speedmaster. As others have said if you need a watch to do yard work and wrestle with the kids get a Seiko. Funny thing is you might find yourself wearing the Seiko more than either watch

I’m in the position of duty dad, two kids one 2 and a half years old, old one 4 and a half.
I’m wearing my speedy almost all the time with no issues at all but pay attention
Having said that I too want to add a blue BB58
Keep the 58 and add a speedy later either used 1861 or the new one starting with 2021.

mention : the speedy will always stay with me

Hi.
Speedmasters aren't going anywhere.
You can easily pick up a used or a new one in the near future. What's unclear is the price of pre owned since the new one is coming. But I wouldn’t bother too much.
