Should I Sell My Black Bay 58?

Congrats, I wear my Speedmaster everywhere. It’s only a year or two old (NIB 2005 I think) and it’s not beaten up but it is a daily watch for me. It’s the perfect size, fits comfortably, and the design is classic. I did try on a BB at the AD, I loved it, the action of the bezel is unbeatable. But, it’s not a Moonwatch.
For me, my Speedy is the one watch that will never be sold, everything else I own may one day be on the way out the door or may not, but the Speedy stays. Its not as if I don't take care of it, I am just less precious with it as I am with my BB58 or my FOIS for example. The speedy I feel is like me, old school and full of little scars but still charming 😗

As others have noted, they're really quite different watches, and can easily coexist, funds allowing. I've owned the BB58 and BB Blue and both are fine watches. I'd be happy with either as a Speedy friend and neighbour, and lived with that scenario for a while (though I swapped out the BBs for a Pelagos).

I'd sell the kids to buy the Speedmaster now, double win situation, both watches and no more worrying about damage.

Great outside-the-box thinking there. What's a kid going for these days? 👍

Keep everything if you can! I recently p/x’d a Seanaster PO for a BB GMT & do not regret my purchase for an instant, HOWEVER I regret the sale of the SM PO EVERY SINGLE DAY! Did I do the wrong thing?‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️

I wear my submariner most days recently, with a speedy and a BB58 Blue amongst others sitting in a vault at the bank - I do wonder sometimes, what's the point of having them sitting there and at times feel that it would be good to settle down to a couple - perhaps a daily and a dress - so my point is, would you wear them both, the BB58 is class and rugged and will do the daily and even wet stuff perfectly well but for me it lacks the presence of an Omega or Rolex (perhaps that's brand snobbery or just like buying an entry level 3 series when you really wanted an M3)...so whilst the BB58 will do the job well will you wear it - if not (for whatever reason), then of course the same question should be asked of the Speedy but I guess since its on your list and the origin of your question, your answer would be yes would be happy to wear it daily - so I suggest sell the BB58 and get the Speedy if you can't justify both, and if you can...then ask yourself whether like me, the additional watch or watches will sit unused and if so, perhaps sell - which is what I intend to do with most of my watches - just need to select my two keepers first.

The BB58 and Moonwatch are both terrific choices. Sounds like a perfect 2 watch collection to me.

Mate, just get the Speedy down the track. I remember responding to your thread on the RForums. I would have gone the Speedy way, but to each there own. BB 58 is not a rare or hard to get watch, the hype is just great marketing. Tudor is all about pumping out watches.

Maybe not a very popular opinion, but Tudor never did the trick for me as a brand. Although i’m sure they make great watches, for me they continue to live in the shadow of its bigger brother Rolex. It’s like owning a Porsche Cayman. Great car and super value for the money, but secretly wishing you would have saved a bit more and bought a 911.

Long story short, I would sell it and go for a speedy 😉

Depends how useful they are, the last time I managed to get a decent 7912/6 bracelet combi for one of mine, but I believe prices have softened since then.

You got a great deal , Back when prices were much higher I swopped two of mine for a life of peace & tranquility which seemed a good deal at the time ,Then the Grandchildren started showing up ......Anyone in need a of a couple of Chimney sweeps . Will consider any reasonable offers or trades .

Hi everyone,

First post and looking for some advice – I bought the Black Bay 58 Black earlier this year and love it. I was deciding between the Black Bay and the Speedmaster Professional Hesalite. I know they are very different but I really like both. I chose the Black Bay because in my opinion it’s more durable as a daily wearer for me – I have two young kids who are always jumping on me/banging into my watch… Maybe I am wrong about durability, but I chose the Black Bay. My dilemma is this – I was planning to buy the Speedmaster in the next couple of years, but now with the 1861 (rumored to be) on its way out, should I sell the Black Bay and buy the outgoing Speedmaster while I can? Or just keep the Black Bay and buy the new Spedmaster at some point down the road? Thanks for your help.

I left Rolex for a brand new Omega Seamaster 300M in black. Prior to my attainment of the Seamaster I had owned most of the Rolex watches produced including my last one, a Ceramic Submariner. I've always thought of Tudor as "moving up" to Rolex whereas Omega has an identity of its own. I wear my Seamaster 24/7 and wouldn't think of going back to Rolex. That being said, my one watch would definitely be the Speedy over the Tudor.

I’ve got both Speedy & 58 , wouldn’t give it second thought wearing either when the grandkids want to play . And the speedy is a lot tougher than people give it credit for & should any real damage be done it’s all easily repaired .

They are both tough, durable watches but if the OP wants to own both some day, keeping the BB58 makes economic sense. I love the BB58 but will likely never own one as I have a pretty decent modern diver that I have owned since new, and don't wear it enough.

I’ll add that in my opinion the modern Tudor watches are like Rolex watches back in the day. People bought them because they like them. They’re expensive but not insane and you can buy one with little difficulty (blue BB58 do have a wait). Because of this I think these Tudor watches will become more collectible than their Rolex brethren down the road.

Of course Rolex is crazy now but in 25 years a BLNR is not going to be $200,000 as people are already paying double the MSRP now. But people will fondly recall the BB58 or other BB’s that they had in their youth and seek that out again. It’s similar to vintage cars in my opinion. The most collectible vintage cars are the ones that the masses had in their youth. In the US this meant mustangs, Firebirds, GTOs, chargers, etc. Cheaper powerful muscle cars. Are vintage Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Aston Martins nice and collectible? Yes,of course but they were available to only a small portion of the population when they came out and a smaller portion who can now collect them.

I say get a nice watch that you enjoy wearing and one that will provide fond memories. Not one that requires you to miss a mortgage payment or store in a safe deposit box.

Don’t see them being that collectable, the Tudor is the most flipped watch I have seen in 20 years of watch collecting.
Have seen one watch flipped between several members here and finally sold to someone else.
Probably more people here that have had a Tudor than actually own a Tudor.

Don’t you think it’s funny how when Rolex finally release the Tudor to all the countries they didn’t sell to years ago all of a sudden there are Tudors easily bought anywhere but 2 year waiting lists for Rolex Submariners. Just weird isn’t it if they are made by the same company

(know plenty here have one but I bet a lot come out that HAD one)

Nothing wrong with Tudor watches just noticed they get flipped a lot.

The design aesthetics of the black bay are far from a sub homage in my mind and stands comfortably alone. Less show and equal amount of go imo.

Any way back on topic, I'd keep your BB58 and get a speedy in a while. Assuming the 1861 is being discontinued it's going to take a long time for them to flush through all channels. And even when they are gone I suspect the last iteration will never significantly appreciate in value.
