Shaggy yet?

I've tried the beard thing, but the habit of shaving every day of my life since I was sixteen (about 30 years of that was compulsory) takes over.

I did the same until I realized I could trade about 10 minutes of sleep every morning for a beard I could trim 2 or 3 times a week

Back in 1978, after a very wayward weekend I went into a board meeting with three days worth of beard. The MD looked at my facial adornment and said with a heavy hint of sarcasm "growing a beard Geoff", I replied in the affirmative and the rest is ...history, haven’t shaved since

K. I cut my wife's hair a couple nights ago and it came out OK. She's still on speaking terms and the dog isn't biting my foot.

Been using el-cheapo clippers and a hand mirror for the last 25 years. On my 2nd set, Remington, probably cost me $25 about 8 years ago. Haven’t had problems with either set. Just keep my hair short anyway so they don’t need to work hard. Usually 6 mm and 3mm. One tip I haven’t yet taken up myself but think about most times - have a spare el-cheapo set on hand in case the one you’re using breaks down part way thru your haircut. It might save you an embarrassing trip to the electrical store.
Amateur tip: Do not economize on electric clippers. In terms of noise, vibration, and precision, the cheap ones are comparable to jackhammers. Using an El Cheapo brand clipper when you've become desperate enough to cut your own hair is a recipe for disaster. I learned this the hard way.
Definitely - good things no cheap; cheap things no good. I’m using my Wahl ‘industrial’ clippers that I routinely employ every Sunday. The beard, on the other hand, has become shagadelic.

Resurrecting this thread as some countries unfortunately have to go to back into lockdown. On the advice of some here, a couple of months ago I decided to buy a set of Wahl Lithium Pro clippers instead of buying a cheap back-up set to back-up my cheap set 🤦. I highly recommend these and now I'm kicking myself I didn't buy better 20+ years ago. Wahl might be the Patek Philippe of the haircare industry and I never would have heard of the brand except for the power of OF. Thanks guys.

Cheapskate!

That's part of it. But it's also super-convenient. I keep my hair pretty short, and I got tired of spending an hour or more at the barber every few weeks, waiting my turn, etc. And now I'm not the guy sitting in the driveway, sheet around my neck, with my wife trying to cut my hair.

I guess you would call me either Jeff Bezos or a "beauty queen" for getting my hair cut at the barbershop every 2 weeks.::rimshot::

I've been cutting my hair also for the past few years so I managed not to be bothered by the barbershops being shutdown.

Not the most modern or fancy haircut but it saves me a couple of hours of time every few weeks. Have been cutting my sons(6y) hair the same way. I think my skills will be enough for him for a few years more before he realizes that I am not a "Hair kind" cutting professional.

Motivated in part by this thread, I also decided to upgrade my trimmers. I went with a rechargeable Panasonic with a linear motor. It gets good reviews and I've had very good experiences with Panasonic electric shavers. The improvement in quality is dramatic and very noticeable. However, I still miss the easy length adjustment of my old cheapy trimmer. The Panasonic has a dial for fine adjustments, but you need to swap guides for different length ranges. Of course, that also makes it much more robust and precise.

I've been a long hair for years, my braids are around 18" so this year hasn't really been any different for my grooming habits.

I can affirm that Panasonic makes a fine set of clippers, though perhaps not as princely as that apparition by Wahl.

I'm on my 3rd set of clippers in over 20 years of doing my own hair - every 2-3 months. For the first several years, I did my son's hair as well. He is 24 now and has come full circle and bought a set of clippers during the lockdown earlier this year. Like Dan said, it is as much about convenience, as it is about saving money. 15 minutes, when I feel like it, anytime during the day compared to driving out to the barber shop and waiting my turn.

You never actually own a Wahl, you merely look after it for the next generation. 😉

I don't know how people with beards can do it - I've never been able to go longer than about 7 days without shaving... just gets so itchy. Maybe if I got past that point it would be better, but I can't do it. On the other side I can't stand shaving every day either so I just shave about once every 3-5 days.

I also have been cutting my own hair for a few years. Have no one to impress and it comes out ok.
