Sept 1 6% Price Hike real?

If I understand my dealer correctly, Omega is now more or less dictating the prices. According to him, they are no longer allowed to give high discounts. On the other hand, he'll probably get his margin cut too. So big discounts are hard to come by. Omega wants to keep prices stable and fight the gray market.

That is what my AD said also. They honoured the pre-increase price on the FOIS I bought in May, but are no longer "negotiating" on the more popular Omegas (SMPs, Speedies, etc) but are able to on outgoing or less popular models (RMs, discontinued LEs, stuff they've had on the shelves for years). I think the days of automatic 15-25% discounts on Omegas may have passed, although whether they can hold that line on pricing if. say, SS Rolexes become more widely available, is an open question I suppose.

I also feel that the prices are going ridiculously high all across the world. To speak on behalf of my country's market, Turkey, the situation is extra worse due to rising customs duties and devaluing Turkish Lira. It's getting really difficult to get a decent watch for an affordable price.

Sort of the same feeling here in Brazil. Speedy used to cost R$19k (BRL local currency, equivalent to the 5350 USD) and with the pandemic our local pricing was increased three times in 4 months, as our currency lost value against the dollar, first to 21k, then 24 and is now at 27k, an incredible increase of over 40% from the price in January. 🙁

That’s very odd. Omega has picked a strange time to do this. We aren’t done with the hurt around the world this virus will bring upon us. When I first saw this thread I thought it said 1.6% increase. I didn’t pay enough attention. Certainly there are a class of people who will be fine regardless what happens, and I’m sure a number of them are in the demographic that walk in AD or boutiques but those living in the middle, with things being shaky, those who might make a purchase of a high end watch to celebrate some milestone I would think many of those people are thinking twice now. I was in that group of people that got an increase in pay for several months during the shutdown, it wasn’t a lot but I was grateful but what I’m hearing much more of is pay cuts. We have a per diem guy working at our place who retired from the government. As we have become more friendly he explained to me he is back at work as his son works for a good company but took a substantial pay cut so he took this job and gives the money to his son. Yes, he is a watch collector but said picking up a watch is the furthest thing from his mind right now.

I know this whole thing is kind of a bummer but the gentleman above explaining his situation with his countries fiat losing value against the dollar and how it hit him just shows you there is a lot that happens when these international companies raise prices in such a manner.

Oh sorry.
I am from the other side of the world. Sometimes I am very selfish, forgetting that not everybody writes things the way we do.

I thought you meant January 10, 2020

That’s why I was confused.

Thanks for clearing it up. I wonder if the same will happen in America.

ill check tomorrow.

So I called my guy at the OB today and he told me they will have (yet another) price adjustment in Brazil tomorrow. The speedy (005) will go from 27k (remember it was 19k in January) to 30.9k

This is insane, it’s probably going up that 6% that has happened in other countries, plus the convention to dollar difference, as our currency keeps loosing value against the USD.

I had planned to purchase it as I finish my MBA next April, but I’m not losing 14% on my money because of a few months. Purchased it right there on the phone, should arrive by the end of October

Congrats on the purchase and on finishing up the MBA.

I wonder why Omega hasn’t issued a price increase in America yet?

Congrats on the purchase -- and my sympathies. Two of my three Omegas would now be out of my new watch budget, and the other one isn't only because it's an out-of-production relative oddball.

Nothing in Belgium. But Belgium seems to be a higher price country compared to Germany, which is odd as there is no currency difference between the two.
I looked at the dark side of the moon with clasp, which is priced at € 11100 in Belgium vs € 10625 in Germany.

Germany lowered VAT from 19% to 16% until the end of the year to encourage sales during the corona crisis. Without this measure we would have the same price.

No change of german prices on Omega's page today.

Here in Germany has been partially increased so far,
Moonwatch 311.33.42.30.01.001 from 4385 euros to 4680 euros. Almost 7%.

I'm curious what happens if the VAT is changed from 16% back to 19%, then it would be an increase of 10%.
