I nearly went that route... but something about the Hirsch Camelgrain in Honey kept calling to me.

I'd bet that when these watches were sold, they pretty much came on a bracelet, or black leather... but the honey takes this a bit more casual... which is perfect for me. 😀

It looks very nice, brown straps always go well with white/silver dials. That's Why I'm looking for a light brown racing strap for mine. So far I found one from B&S that I quite like, but it's over a hundred bucks... might as well get one fit to measure my preferences for that kind of money.
If someone has a hint where to find nice racing straps, preferably in Europe, in 19 mm I'm all ears 😀.

Something like this (not my bullhead unfortunately):

That's realy nice! I love the petroleum blue dial 6138's ... infact so much I bought one, kind off... the seller send me the wrong watch, black dialed, instead of the petroleum one.... mixup on his part with the pictures on eBay. All went well, send the watch back and he refunded.... but I'm still on the hunt for one.

Nice to have a chance here to introduce our Seikos ... here is my Chrono Sports 100 which my parents gave me as a present for my confirmation in 1985. One day I forgot to change the battery and when I picked it some years later the battery was exploded in the watch killing the movement without any chance to repair it. I was unbelievable sad but then started to observe eBay for another spare model. And yes ... finally I found it in an terrible outside condition and the seller didn't gave me guarantee that the movement would still work. But spending roundabout 60€ was a reasonable risk for me. I went to a local watchmaker who is specialized in Seiko. He switched the movement - and YES ... it was running ... until today. Now I take care and every time the battery is empty, I let it change immediately ...

When I started this thread I knew I had to drag my old Seiko out of hiding and get it serviced. After 30 years of hard use it had been parked when I started down the vintage watch road. Now after ten years in the sock drawer its just back from service and has a place of honor in the collection as its the only "vintage" watch I've owned from new.

Its been through many motorcycle accidents on and off road, (about 12, I tend to walk funny on chilly days now...) one major car wreck (put the engine through the firewall on one of the cars involved) its been crushed between a 289 hypo and the firewall of a 68 Mustang GT Fastback during an engine swap, (felt like it broke my arm) been dropped into water too many times and was lost in a tank of old hydraulic oil once.

So may I present, the watch that inspired this thread, the not forgotten fat girl friend, the skeleton in the closet, the old lump.... my late seventies 6308-8000 Seiko

The watch maker charged almost nothing a full service because he thought it was such a nice piece.
(don't ever get rid of this one, they don't make 'em like this any longer)

Super cool watch! And a very nice and sharp case!

Please take a look at your spring bars! The one in the picture looks realy bent at the end! Would be a shame to loose such a beautiful piece because of a worn springbar.

Cheers, max

This rather crisp Seiko Sportsmatic Calendar 820 ref. 7625-8930 arrived earlier this week, just waiting on a NOS cyclops crystal from the Netherlands. 👍

Your welcome 😉. I lost two watches due to weak spring bars, nothing fancy just cheap daily beaters thankfully!

Some of us have been talking in another forum about kickstarting an annual day to celebrate Colonel William Pogue and the watch that is nicknamed after him.

For those that don’t know (and I doubt that’s anyone here), William Pogue was an American astronaut who launched into space in 1973 to do a stint on Skylab. During his early training he had not yet been given a NASA standard issue Speedmaster so he went out and bought himself a gold dial 6139-6005 (almost definitely a 6005) from the shop round the corner to help him time engine burns. He even put it on tick (layaway I think it’s called in the USA) as he didn’t have the cash to buy it outright.

When he launched into space he took his 6139-6005 with him as he was more used to it than the Speedy NASA had now issued him. There are some pics of him in space aboard Skylab wearing it. Some eagle eyed bod named David Bruno spotted this many years later, wrote to him, and he confirmed it. The watch then got nicknamed after him and a legend was born.

So now the history lesson is over; a few of us have been chatting about commemorating this. The day we’ve chosen is November 16th, as that was the day in 1973 that the 6139 became the first automatic chronograph in space - by accident as only Seiko can! The plan is that those of us that choose to all wear our Pogue’s on the day for the WRUW threads, and those with instagram or other social media’s hashtag the granny out of it.
#PogueDay #Skylab #NASA you get the idea.

And hell, Speedmasters get #SpeedyTuesday EVERY WEEK and the recent release of a really cool Speedy Tuesday LE watch! Surely we can have a #PogueDay once a year?

Who’s with my brothers and sisters? Who will fight the good fight? Who will... sorry, got carried away. If you’re up for it, spread the word on other forums you visit, between us I’m sure we can make this a thing!

Ps - no puritanical Pogue nonsense allowed. Any 6139-600x will do, in any color you have, from any year. Frankens are very welcome. In my mind there is only one watch in existence that is a true Pogue, and that watch was sold to an anonymous bidder at auction many years ago. (For about $6k, can you imagine what it would be now!!!)

If you got through all that, well done, make yourself a nice cup of tea, and join in if you would like to.

Cheers,
Pip

Two weeks today will be the first ever International Pogue Day! Be there or be... wearing something else, completely your choice of course! Remember, the rule is no snobbishness allowed about what is and isn’t a Pogue, whatever you have will be good enough.
Hope you feel like joining in and wearing a Seiko 6139 for the day
