I am a sucker for vintage 80s stuff but also note a fine line between charming and gaudy.
Guigaro designs skirt this line for me.
I loved the Aliens movie and like looking at the Aliens watches, but doubt I’ll ever own one. I identify them way to closely to the film and would feel like a middle aged cosplay dude wearing one. But would love to hear from anyone who owns one.
I feel the same about Giugiaro designed cars. Some are instant classics and some are strange wedge-mobiles. But I generally appreciate the contributions his aesthetic gave to that whole era.
But when I came across this 7A28-7A00 a few years ago, I couldn’t pass it up.
First one major drawback. No AR on the crystal (plus mediocre photo skills) made this a bear to photograph.
This reference has enough 80s Giugiaro flair without going overboard. I’m also fascinated by the provenance of this specific piece. The seller theorized that it got the scratch visible on the bezel around 12-1 either before or while in the possession of the original dealer and that the dealer couldn’t sell it as new because of that. The rest of the watch is in surprisingly pristine condition, and the bracelet does not appear to have been worn or ever resized.
What I like about this watch is the mysteriously good condition and the “driver” style configuration with the dial rotated 15 degrees from center and tilted 5 degrees for easier visibility while holding a steering wheel. This particular reference was originally marketed for motorcycle or bicycle riding.
Some downsides are the plastic case and bracelet feel a little cheap. And the snap-in style clasp worries me that that plastic tab that compresses and slides into the slot on the other end of the clasp will eventually wear and break off. Tho in fairness the plastic enhances the 80s aesthetic and feel when handling the watch.
Ultimately I really like this watch, the era and aesthetic it represents, and the sense that it came out of a sealed time capsule.
