I already have my notes:

Movement service

Polish crystal

Ultrasonic cleaning (NOT polishing) of case and bracelet

Adjust bracelet to my wrist

Ken has been working on my dad’s watches for years and will adhere to the instructions I give him.
I’d make sure it’s on the work order. Not insulting the guy just to protect your self in regards to dial and hands.

So my list stands as such for the work order:

1) Movement service
2) Polish crystal
3) Ultrasonic cleaning of case & bracelet - DO NOT POLISH EITHER OF THEM
4) Do not change dial, hands, or bezel
5) Do not relume or clean the dial
6) All Replaced parts returned to me
7) Adjust bracelet to my wrist
8) Appraisal of watch

Here's hoping it won't cost me an arm and a leg! Thanks again, folks and have a Happy Thanksgiving if you're celebrating!

Perfect...

If you want an insurance appraisal they can do it. But market value is around 6-9k on bracelet. Need better pictures to give a stronger value.

@Tarkus697 Learned well, you have. ;-)

No harm in getting an appraisal, but unless the place you are taking it is very unusual, they will probably give it a value of the "equivalent" modern replacement. Very few places have the ability or desire to provide a market value appraisal of a collectible vintage watch. Talk to your insurance agent about what he/she will require to insure it for actual replacement value. You will most likely need a rider on your homeowner's policy.

We rent so this would be a separate rider. I’ve got some other jewelry to insure as well so it would all be on there.

Watch is with Ken. Initial estimate is between $5-600 for the necessary work. MUCH better than I was getting in Philly. He’ll call me with any questions but all of the above was noted on the work order.

Lucky you!!!!! Good choice to ask the forum for help. I have seen so many great watches that had been destroyed during omega service.
And: As it is the watch of your granddad there can't be any other option then keeping it as original as possible!!
Happy for you!
PS: show us some pictures after service!
Your list looks good btw!

$695.50 later and she’s back with me. No parts needed replacing except for the gasket, which had dissolved due to age. One full disassembly, major cleaning, crystal polish, and mechanical service later and she’s running like a champ!

Thanks for all the advice, gang! Looking forward to my new daily driver!

Thanks for posting a follow up. I enjoy seeing the end result from these stories about grandfather watches.

Your original bid stated the hands would be replaced. Did they end up cleaning them up and not replacing? It is hard to tell from the original pic.

That was only if I did Omega service. My guy did everything in house so they’re the original hands, face, etc.

According to Ken, the only non-original thing in this watch now is the gasket since the original had deteriorated with age to the point where Ken described the inside of the watch as “all funked up.”

Otherwise, he said it was in amazing shape for its age and just needed a heavy duty mechanical service and gentle cleaning.

Beautiful! Job well done. The watch looks terrific now.
I wish you, your kids, and your future grandchildren many more years of enjoyment with this heirloom piece.

I also inherited his Hamilton pocketwatch from 1926 that his dad gave to him when he graduated HS. Could probably use a cleaning but it still runs perfectly.
