sorely tempted, since I caught the Connie-lust from hanging around here - depends a lot on a few auctions between now and then....:whistling:

If you guys are in, I'm probably out. I'm a bargain hunter and this poker game is going to get very expensive.

Well it is going up quickly and we will of course have the end push of the real bid contenders. In the end the winner may be an "Ashley bidder" , that is, the guy who snipes with a 10-50,000 bid to ensure wiping out the completion. Well, I should have bought Mike's white arrowhead when I had the chance.

You can't win them all, so one has to count the blessings of what you do have. I am still very happy with my original black 168.0010

Interesting. This is the pattern that has emerged with good-quality Zeniths as well. When you review the auction, there is a nice progression of increasing bids and then a very few high-value snipes in the last seconds - "Ashley-bidders" as you term it. It's OK if you are the only deep-pocket watch-nut in it (Ashley - not casting a personal aspersion, just speaking in general terms using Steve's terminology), but creates a giant sucking sound in the wallet when there is more than one of you. The flip side is that I have bid rationally, been smoked repeatedly, and am getting fed up with it.

Every time I see a thread about a 50's or 60's pie pan it reminds me how happy I am to have gotten mine already. This is scary stuff.

It should be noted to Lou and others when I used the term "Ashley bidder", I am just razzing Ash. Ashley accidentally bid 50,000. on a gold pie pan Seamaster and won it. He was shocked and relieved to find that the watch came down to his projected "real" bid price. Close call :D

Yea... I'd meant to bid $5,000 on that Seamaster Steve's talking about but accidentally hit an extra zero, it didn't end up doing any more damage than the $5k bid would have though thankfully.

I'm a 25 year old systems engineer, so if I made a habit of doing that I'd be very broke very fast.

Achim, most vintage white gold is coated with rhodium as it tends to yellow over time. I would expect that the markers on your watch are still rhodium plated. So while JD was obviously correct, he may have omitted to tell you they were also plated with rhodium (which, incidentally, gram for gram, is more expensive than gold)

Most vintage white gold has colour values in the mid 20s whereas modern white gold can be got down into the teens with the right combination of colourant metals.

    Cheers
    Desmond

I have gotten smoked so many times bidding what I thought was a reasonable price - I would say 50% of the time I am the underbidder. I love a good bargain as much as the next guy and have clearly lost several pieces due to this - perhaps I'll change some going forward and do my best to channel my inner Ashley...

I think we just coined another new term.

"Mike, check out this eBay listing: www.xxxxxxxeBayxxxxx.con and tell me what you think."

"That's a heck of a nice piece, Dennis - but it's going to have a lot of interest."

"No worries. I just got my tax return and bonus check so I'm going to put in an 'Ashley bid' to secure it for my collection."

    ;):p
