I think William does a damn good job explaining his price chart. All to often people only read the top $¥£ portion and interpret it as they see fit depending if they're a buyer or seller.

I've said it before on this forum but I never see watches sell for less than what someone purchased it for (maybe modern). Let's all just admit we love watches and making money on them to fund the next purchase.
I couldn’t agree more. The explanation of the chart couldn’t be clearer or more helpful.

iPhone 7 and the right light conditions do wonders 😉.

I always think the same when I see a picture of a watch taken by a proper camera.

I suppose it's too easy to look up Speedmaster101, click straight on the price list, (maybe read the footnote) and arrive at a conclusion.

My own view, as a novice, is that it is really necessary to read the whole site from start to finish. If people take the trouble to do that, the price list makes far more sense. It's not just about valuation of a particular reference, it's about assessment of an individual watch. The first page is very clear on that:

(Quote from Speedmaster101) "This site is all about the assessment and valuation. We need to know if the watch is original, or what is incorrect, in order to find a value......"

I'm by NO stretch a pro, but here is my '71 taken with my 7, under the right conditions.

I think the reason why people try to sell at inflated prices or are not great at determining what "Good" means based on SP101.com is because there are 3 categories: Running, Good and Collector. I assume this goes through people's minds:

Step 1) "Oh look, the Collector's category implies an almost unworn, untouched, unpolished, faultless watch. My watch is definitely not in this category."
Step 2) "But wait, my watch has all the correct parts and/or recently serviced so it can't be in the Running category"
Step 3) "Heyyy, it says that Good is the condition most collectors or owners are happy with. I am an owner and collector and I was happy with this watch when I bought it!"

Last but not least, people will naturally choose "middle" category because it is easy to do so.

I've always thought of the price chart as a spectrum. There are an infinite number of points between each defined rating.

..ok, maybe not infinite, but a lot...

Like, what's half way between Running and Good?

I’m genuinely confused by any criticism of Speedmaster101, or the associated price chart.

It’s a well-known member sharing his personal (and extensive) knowledge.

There are almost zero references for price data on vintage watches online - even if you feel the data is inaccurate (i don’t feel this way), would you prefer it not exist? Is no data better than data you feel needs some mild tweaking?

If you don’t like it, don’t f’ing use it and ignore anyone that refers to it. In contrast, i want to genuinely thank @Spacefruit for taking on the thankless but thoroughly helpful task of putting a chart that many of us refer to together for no compensation - cheers.

It is also important to note that SP101.com clealy states that the price chart is REFLECTIVE, not PREDICTIVE.

In other words, people are free to sell their watches at whatever price they think the market will accept.

My ‘reference’ Ed White, which I bought from a fellow OF member in May. This one, I paid (some might argue overpaid) $22.5k for, pristine 1035 bracelet and 506 end links included.

As long as we’re posting watches.

Thank you again @Sharp !

@nonuffinkbloke Jonathan, you've past novice at this point. I dub thee Competent.
Very kind of you Joel.😟

If my 50+ years obsession with guitars is anything to go by, I suspect this 'watch malarky' is also a very long learning process. Fortunately an interesting, enjoyable and suprisingly addictive one. 😀
