With all talk about so called waitlists, ie. people getting bumped up the list with additional purchases at AD's, outrages market value pricing of SS models, I'm curious to know whether there is definitive proof whether the asking prices of resellers are actually being paid or is it all speculation?

In my experience, the prices asked are not what's being paid. I would say you need to look at £500-£1000 less. But as with the majority of high end products at the moment, the market has stalled. I see nothing to say that the trend in watch investment will reverse so no immediate panic. I would say "keep on buying" but that's a laugh.....

Not in the market for a Rolex but was wondering whether there is actual truth in market value as that is creating the AD's approach to there selling practises / waiting lists.

There is a sub-forum for questions like this and it is not this one.

This is really getting old, ground hogs day, every few weeks a post about a Rolex bubble or AD wait list pops up. This is the new norm for now until market forces dictate otherwise. A quick search here or on TRF will provide you with ample advice/opinion. For now, either buy at a premium or look the other way, no need to spend time speculating.

The market price is the market price. Mrsp is fictional. Buy if you like, if you don’t buy something else.

You won’t get a Daytona at £10k any time soon so only you can decide if it’s worth £20k....

    Other watch brands too.

If the budget deficit keeps skyrocketing past 1 trillion in north America and this calamity keeps going on in Europe I wouldn't be surprised to see another global recession.

When that happens, this whole luxury goods market will ease right up.

For now its a turkey shoot.

I was in an omega boutique yesterday and the manager was quite candid, big slump in sales in this last quarter apparently.

Good news for Rolex buyers in the UK, buying from Watches Of Switzerland, they mentioned yesterday that they are giving an additional 5 year warranty on top of the 5 yrs that comes with a new Rolex, but a 10yr warranty still wouldn't be much use if they don't have any stock.

It doesn’t help when you don’t have watches to sell ...

Supply and demand. People speculate on watch prices based on the perception that Rolex will only make a certain amount. If Rolex dumps 100,000 Batmans into the market over the next 60 days the prices will plummet for all who paid over retail. They aren’t limited editions and eventually the majority of people that want one will get it. Demand will go down while production remains the same and prices will drop

Other than briefly in 2008, when have Rolex watches ever gone down in value?

    Bubble schmuggle.

    ::facepalm1::

When has the value of housing ever gone down?

    Or gold?

    Or the USD?

Are you suggesting Rolex is the one thing in the world ever that rises in value?

I'm suggesting it's too improbable to let worry over it prevent you from buying a luxury commodity that you should only be paying for with discretionary money. Yes.

Well, bubble is an appropriate word in this case - vintage Rolex Bubblebacks. At one time they were hotter than the sun, and commanding huge values, and then they were not.

Nothing is guaranteed to increase value forever, even Rolex...

When was the last time every Rolex stainless steel sports model sold for significantly over rrp?

Rolex's have tended to hold or increase their value wellbut historically this was based on buying at rrp. If the resale value was an issue I'd be extremely cautious about paying a grey market premium for a Sub or GMT right now.
