Hoi
How big a problem is the rotor axle?

when it's worn and too loose, the rotor will touch the case back, the movement and it cannot move around freely as it should.

Nixon and Agnew didn't accept theirs. Idiots.

Still don't know what market value really is on these atm, I've only seen auction house ones go and a couple beat up / incomplete examples on the bay usually with wrong bezels, this one looks like its taken a good dent to the top but at least its the right colour.

I suspect same but dont see any clear evidence yet of anything untoward.

Ended at $3550, which I think is rather high for one with incorrect hands, cracked crystal, and no bracelet, no?

Yes, hands should be broad arrow ones on this serial, changed around '65.
My 165.024 with about same serial; 24.71x, has broad arrows + same type bezel and is original.
My 165.024-64 with serial 23.7x has stick hands and early bezel
On the other hand, could be okay. These transition phases are allways full of "if's". Lume and rest of the watch looks okay and correct.
Prices are also climbing for the SM300's, but yes, this one is a bit on the top side.

I'm new to the world of Omega vintage and trying to pick up as much knowledge as possible. How did you know that the rotor axle was worn... from the pictures?

You can see where it has been rubbing the inside of the case back and there are also signs of this rubbing on the rotor itself. It might be an historical issue that has been sorted out but unless there is some paperwork to prove tthat it has, you should always assume that it hasn't.
