why paint all new people coming to the site with that same brush?

I went back some 8+ years ago looking for a bracelet reference and happened to read all my original posts.

You could have changed my username for any of thousands of noob's, noob's making selfish, stupid requests based on pieces of silver and asking for knowledge and skills that others have worked many years to assemble.

I was met with patience, with courtesy and with a gentlemanly manner that I revere to this day!

@SpikiSpikester, a consummate gentleman and highly knowledgeable professional in many fields , @gatorcpa , an accountant in the middle of a tax season, @cicindela, a moderator taking the time to embrace .....and so many others like Jim, Mike, Erich, Yann, Andy, Kyle,..... all world class collectors that courteously put up with my shit, my stupidity, my selfishness and introduced me to a fantastic hobby that combines the worlds of artistic beauty, science, math, physics and history.

We have a hobby that uses math, science, art and physics to express and measure an abstract concept called time.
Abstract in the sense that the past and the future are all concepts and that only the present is real.

I'm not looking for an intro to a book deal or for the longest-winded post award.

I'm looking for perpetuation of the wonderful culture and climate that we enjoy.

Part of this wonderful culture is concern for our brothers/sisters and we pray for those "Down Under".

As one of those people reminiscent of yourself of 8+ years ago (except, living today) I happened upon the thread which described the 200-post-requirement for commenting in "For Sale" threads, and bristled a little. Not for being restricted from selling, but for being restricted from interacting as a potential buyer. I wondered, "will I ever reach 200 posts?" which indeed I may never do.

However..... on reading THIS thread and a few others I am starting to see why..... it's a valuable and important gesture. For all, including me. There are an abundance of rules, policies, conventions, standards and manners to OF of which I'm quite ignorant. It would do very little good for new people to make inane (even if well-intentioned) remarks in threads of that sort, even while such new people might find it entertaining. 😀 Far better, to spend the time and effort to make a few hundred quality comments and hopefully learn in the meantime. If I fail to learn or fail the quality test, moderators are standing by to assist. I hope....

@UncleBuck ... ”a fantastic hobby that combines the worlds of artistic beauty, science, math, physics and history”.

What a great way of putting it! I’m going to steal that for when the next person asks me why I like watches, and I’m looking forward to sounding so eloquent and worldly! Thanks ... 👍

there is nothing to prevent you from interacting as a buyer. send a message to the seller and make a deal.

It seems difficult to convey to others that polite communication is always the answer!

I am more interested in getting to the truth of the matter. The perceived value of the watch is of little concern to me. I have and have no problem with being corrected when I have made a mistake.
I never claimed, "I'm an expert and everyone else is wrong". I immediately withdrew the item from sale as I felt there was some merit in what other members were saying.
I own around 800 watches but I am NO expert, I learn more every day. If anyone claims they are an expert I immediately know they are full of shit!!!!
I did/do take Umbridge at some members dogpiling and claiming I was intentionally trying to deceive. I note the members who claimed as such were not big enough to withdraw those claims.
I am currently in Bega NSW helping to fight the fires ravaging the area. If "Larry S" hasn't opened a new thread by the time things calm down here I will do so myself.
The shit is really going to hit the fan here on Saturday, its going to make an argument over a dial somewhat inconsequential!!!!
Below is a picture of the main street in Bega at mid-day on Tuesday.

Its really bad down here. The Police are trying to get everyone out... and anyone with any brains would go.

If any members have some spare funds, Im sure the Australian red cross would appreciate a donation!!
Stay safe . Will get a thread going hopefully tomorrow.

As mentioned above, there is no 200-post limit as a buyer. You can't post in the sales thread, but that is not the way to buy anyway. Deals are made via PM, and you can send a PM even if you are a lurker with zero posts.

This seems to be a somewhat common misconception, although many people seem to get it, since I'm often contacted by lurkers when I'm selling something.

My post was somewhat unclear. I apologize for that.
I meant specifically "ability to interact in the thread" not- simply to make PM's, which as you say are not restricted in any fashion.
That such business on Omega Forums is conducted largely in PM's and not in public thread commentary is a convention I'm still getting used to, because it seems non-intuitive to me. Part of my learning curve, apparently. 📖

Sorry if it sounds like a complaint- it's not.
The system of OF apparently works, and it seems to work well!

Don’t worry @timecube - I have read several of your posts in the last 4 days you have been here and they have been helpful and thoughtful, you have already started off on the right foot. And if you keep as active as you have been, you will hit 200 before you know it.
I mainly see the 200 block on the Sales forum as a way to avoid drive-by flaming- someone on another site has one for sale, they sign up here- shit on a members watch, then link to their own. I know that would get caught quickly even without the 200 block in place, but it’s insurance.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy the diverse, informative and sometimes hilarious dialogue.
There are a few legendary threads that really illustrate the true personalitiies of several members around here- you’ll find them, then either realize you are home, or run screaming.

Hey dude god bless take care. I was just reading an article about the amount of wildlife being killed in the flames. The numbers were staggering. I helped put out a fire in the Berkshires in Massachusetts it was my one and only encounter with a Forrest blaze like that and the speed at which they move is astounding. I hope things get under control ASAP and hats off to the volunteers and the pros the fires ain’t no joke

I’ve always looked at the PWS forum as safe hunting grounds...

Agreed, the redial should be disclosed.
He didn’t say anything about the originality of the dial, so he hasn’t been deceptive- but this is a prime case where a PM should be sent to allow him to correct that himself.
And it is possible that he doesn’t know it is a redial....benefit of the doubt

I still think it is- notice that this has been seen, and hopefully will be addressed before someone unkowingly buys a redial.
