the term "Poor Man's XXX" refers to a watch that was assembled by the same manufacture, its commonly misused.

Really? That's not how I see it and I'm sure a lot of people agree with my viewpoint. A "poor man's XXX" is something that the people who can't afford the XXX buy because of similarities in appearance / function without regard to manufacturer.

a lot of people do agree with your viewpoint thats why there is confusion. The term is applied incorrectly by many.

Okay, fair enough. We each have our personal windmills to tilt at - yours being the "poor man's XXX"; mine being "deployant".

I actually agree with Cajun on the definition. Where we part ways is that I don't count a watch as made by Brand X, unless it is signed by Brand X. For example, I don't count my Gruen as a "poor man's Heuer", as there is no way I can prove it was made by Heuer. The movement and other parts, probably, but not assembled in Heuer's factory.

I guess this was a "poor man's Maserati".

Built in Italy (not sure if it was Maserati's factory) with crappy Chrysler LeBaron parts.

P.S. I read the local newspaper every day, so I don't understand your caption for CajunTiger at all.

well, I'm not sure we actually part here. I actually agree with what you are saying. The only exception I mentioned is this one. The movement is not signed Heuer, but the case is marked 73343, which is a Heuer reference number. Wether or not its a true poor mans Heuer is not known, but the similarities are so striking Im going to say it is. I can't imagine any other reason it has this reference number on the case and why would Benrus so blatantly steal such a unique design even though all the parts are available. Every single detail is an exact copy of the Camaro.

You don't. 😉 I do. 😁 Evan / gatorcpa was directing that question to me.

Here's where it came from.... a combination of these two posts:

It had nothing to do with InvestiGators - it was about real AlliGators and the comments made by Steve and you above.

Hey now, you don't get to choose it. I have, under rare circumstances, allowed a member to edit the wording or recommend another funny incident to be recorded for posterity, but usually I go with what first pops in my head that I can keep under 50 characters.

well it should say Tigers eat Gators for breakfast 😉
We'll see in October. 😎
I do like Les Miles. It would have been incredibly stupid to fire him. Yet it almost happened.

How about using the word "alligator" (small a) then.

Don't want to confuse the people. 95% will never read either thread.

yea, simply crazy...but in the end we gained some major staff upgrades. Sad but if all that didn't go down we probably would have had the #1 recruiting class. The whole thing was handled so poorly.

Means nothing unless you do it every year. Nick the P🤬ck is always in the top 3, you have to give him that. Urban the Buckeye Nut, too. Florida hasn't had a good class since he flamed out.

You're a (former) journalist.

Then journalize 😜😁

I always get a kick out of this gold-plated Dugena "Camaro" I have. Many so-called poor man's Heuers are only tangentially similar to the real thing; as far as I can tell, this one is identical except for the signature on the dial.

Compare with this Camaro sold at Bonhams in the Haslinger collection sale:

Now comes the fun part: when I opened up the Dugena, I discovered that the movement is unsigned but its inner case-back is marked "Heuer Leonidas SA".

I know there are many theories as to how this sort of thing happened... I don't think we will ever know the answer for sure, but I always get a thrill when I come across watches like these, which I assume are actually rarer than the Heuer versions (though will probably always trade at a discount).
