What I'm wondering is - maybe it's just me - but the original owner (seller) lost the box & papers and doesn't even know what year but knows how to open up the caseback... and has the tool for it... why? How could the owner be so meticulous on one side and so careless on the other.. anyway I guess I'm just being too suspicious.

Sounds like the seller is the 3rd owner, so maybe one of the first two lost the box and papers.

I was shocked when I realized that you can’t find an omega year of manufacture through serial number if the watch was made after 2010.
Maybe you guys know how to find the year of the newest made omegas?

The FOIS was released in 2012, so close to 8 years of production.
From another thread we know that there are now at least 12500 confirmed. Which would be just over 1500 pieces per year.
With the number just below 3000, I'd guess it is from 2013. But that's all it is, a guess.

Man good to know! Thank you.
So it will need a service soon since it’s about 7 years old. that surely adds 300 euros or more to this purchase

Depending on how much it's been worn, yes. Since you have no way of knowing, I'd say you might want to think about it. Or at least use it as ammunition for negotiations with the seller to lower the price. Omega suggests a service every 5 years, but I'm sure there are people out there that stretch that a lot longer and are still fine.

Not sure where in Europe you are, but the German Omega website lists the manual Chronograph service cost as 750 Euros.
I'm also not sure how much an independent watch maker would charge.

The omega com site suggest 650 euros for a complete service ... My watchmaker said he will need 200 apart for the parts.

By taking into account all this thread and your really helpful posts my friends I made my mind and I gave an offer some minutes ago.. I will let you know what happened .

Thank you all for your amazing replies and help. I feel like I belong to a family here in OF!!

I like to buy used and save money, but when the savings aren't so great, and you add in the cost of a service new sounds better and better. Add in the new strap/bracelet, no scratches or dings and a warranty, and if you can find a nice gray market seller that saves you thousands of euros, especially if you never intend to sell it, then maybe new is the way to go.

I've bought several Omegas used, but the last three were all new - one from an AD and my two Speedmasters from a nice gentleman in Sweden who gave me great savings and they still have the Omega warranty.

Exactly!!
Patience is one of the biggest qualities in life. Putting some extra cash away at the end of every month is also a virtue.
I am not sure if buying watches is ... :whipped:

You don’t necessarily need to buy new, there’s good deals of relatively unworn or well loooked after versions of the FOIS about and they come up regularly.

I got mine, full set from the first owner for £2.5k last year and it was in near mint condition and made a new watch friend into the bargain.

Bide your time and watch the usual channels and a good one will come up for not very much more than your present budget... hopefully by then you will have a few quid and will be in a position to get one without issues and that won’t weigh heavily on your mind once the initial rush has worn off.

Oh and great choice btw, absolutely love mine and less common than the professional which are everywhere (no offence love the professional too)
