Patek Nautilus: is the hype deserved?

Back in 1979 the US list price was $3,750 (equivalent to $13,300 today). I bought mine at $3,000 from an AD, they were not a hot seller. Long ago sold it but wished I would have just tucked the watch away for a rainy day.

There’s a lot in their lineup that I obviously don’t understand/appreciate.

I feel the same. There are very few watches they make that resonate with me, as much as I admire the workmanship...

If they were $2k they couldn't make them fast enough.
Hell, if they were only $20k they would fly out of the AD's showroom!

I wonder...I think part of the appeal now is the obscene price, being part of that exclusive, high-roller club.

Yeah. If everyone can have one then it's not special.

Of course it is. People ALWAYS want what they cant have. It's all hype driven. People are buying these and other watches because they think they need to, but in reality don't even really appreciate or like the watch itself.

Not watch related, but in the same vein. I sell fountain pens as well and two years ago I was contacted by someone who has bought watches from me.

He was looking for a Montblanc pen but preferred new over vintage. I had a newer 149 and we did the deal.

When he received the pen he was very happy with it, because his boss had one and noticed that he had the MB in his shirt pocket and commented favourably on it.

It was never about owning a nice fountain pen, it was about impressing his boss and having what he has.

I tried on a 5711 about 4 years ago, and in the hand it looked great, but not so much on my wide wrist. I liked the idea of owning one, but not the idea of trying to retrain my eyeballs to enjoy a watch that felt too small (same with Reverso).

It could have been mine, but I passed and that year I bought a GSOTM, Rolex GMT II BLNR, Tudor BBR, and WatchCo SM 300 - with quite a bit of money left in the bank for a few other things. I still wonder if I'd found an AP RO to try on, would I have bought that? I think so.

I bought my 5711 from a colleague some time ago, fortunately before the prices went totally insane.

Some may not like the case shape, but I dig the thin case, and the amazing dial. It's quite comfortable on the wrist, and goes well with a suit, or smart casual, or even barefoot or with flip flops!

As the owner of a RO as well, I actually find the RO dressier than the 5711. The prices for both are now crazy, so ironically I tend to wear them less often as people start noticing them a bit more.
Oh mate I didn't know you had one, incredible luck getting one early, I'll have to try it on next time in SG!

Saw this a few days ago . I didn’t like either one though I did like the points he made

I would love to own one if one day the price becomes affordable again . It’s even more ridiculous than Batman, hulk or Daytona, just like the RO.

Between the RO and nautilus , I prefer the older RO

The strongly pronounced horizontal lines thru the dial are distracting at best ; unattractive imo. Whatever floats ya....

Now, the Nautilus is coming to the fore. It's the more sophisticated, thinking-man's Submariner...
Dude...you said “thinking-man”. 😲

Dang...I’m out...I ain’t no “thinking-man”...but maybe I’ll [attempt to] make a New Year’s resolution [to attempt] to be one. 👍

Hot dang, @STANDY ...due to technology limitations at OF, I’m unable to “like” your post more than once...so I’ll do my own craptastic technology and “like” it 52 times. 👍
