I firmly put the Nautilus in the category of "reserve judgment until you try it." Prior to trying on a 3700 (and then later a 5711), I thought the design was odd and didn't like the bulbous, polished center links of the bracelet or the "ear" on the left side of the case that is for symmetry more than anything else. Then I tried it on, and damn if it wasn't the silkiest-feeling watch I've worn. I have voted with my wallet, as I recently bought a Royal Oak, but I would love to add a Nautilus at some point down the line. Other than the Royal Oak, there isn't much that really feels the same on the wrist (and the RO wears differently, FWIW).

I bought a pair of two-tone Ladies and Gents Nautilus NIB in 1986.
Unfortunately I bought a 3800 for myself instead of the 3700 my jeweler recommended 🙁
My 3800 had one of the few Patek movements that did not merit the Geneva Seal. It's split crown was a big issue.
I sold it a couple of decades later for a nice little profit and would buy the new 5711 in a heartbeat if I hit the lottery.

Never had an opportunity to try one on, but based on the pictures and if I win the lottery the first call I make will to be to get me one of those, SS, platinum, white gold, don t care would love to own one. I doubt it will ever be a real issue for me but nice to dream.

They do nothing for me.It looks ugly to my eyes.
Having made the above comment,so many people love them that I some times question myself.
I cannot warm to the design as hard as I try.

I think it deserves the hype, just for being watch that you can't mix up with any other watch....It has that unique look. I like it a lot, but can't afford it.

Hmmm...I think it looks very related to the other Gerald Genta designed watches.

One designer has his own signature, that you can trace trough his work, I suppose. I think Nautilus is more recognizable though.

Before the recent boom (around 2016) I decided I wanted a “Genta” watch. I managed to track down (or maybe I should say, I walked into a dealer and they had...) a used 5711. I decided I liked the royal oak more, and eventually got my hands on the 15202. Blasphemous as it sounds, I simply didn’t like the dial and some very minor proportions of the 5711.

Not to say I don’t like the general nautilus design though, as I did end up getting a different model eventually (5990, travel time chrono) and like it a lot.

I recon the design of the nautilus is amazing. however arguably the movement is fairly outdated (not necessarily a bad thing), but the bracelet and clasp build is definitely a bit sub par... pins to hold in the linksa and the clasp quality is very poor for the price IMO. I guess you could argue the clasp keeps the bracelet very thin, which helps with the overall aesthetic, but surely for the price they could do a far better job. Entry level rolex and omega have far better built (not finished) bracelets and clasps IMO.

Get an overseas! Super undervalued, although a bit clunkier

I love the design, but not at today's (or likely tomorrow's) prices.

As an aside, my partner worked for a while on the PP magazine in the early noughties. She likes the Nautilus, but apparently it was rarely featured in the mag since it was not considered a draw for readers -- not high-end enough, too common, she says (in the British sense).

Honestly, the Nautilus is a great looking watch, mechanically it's really good as well, and, come on, it's Patek, BUT, I wouldn't buy one.
I don't know why but PP, for me, are the classier watches, the perpetual calendars, the calatrava, these are the ones I would buy if I had the money to buy a PP, but, of course, that's my taste and my opinion.

Patek Nautilus: is the hype deserved?

No, in my opinion. I think it’s ugly, boring and bulky. Even if it was only $2k, I wouldn’t buy it.

There’s a lot in their lineup that I obviously don’t understand/appreciate.

If they were $2k they couldn't make them fast enough.
Hell, if they were only $20k they would fly out of the AD's showroom!

Personally it is one of my 5 fav watches and I will own one. I won’t buy one while the “hype” is where it is and 2nd hand units are 2x MSRP but once I find one for MSRP then I will be an owner. The blue dialed shown earlier is simply stunning and would be my choice of models

I would rather buy a PP world time, more interesting watch for me and price more reasonable. Usually complicate PP watches cost more than basic calibers, now because of the hype otherwise would have a normal price.
