Hi all,

I'm looking at a local dog-legged pie pan Constellation 168.005 in gold cap and my overall feel about the watch and its condition is pretty good but still want second opinion on this as I'm no expert.

Personal, everything seems original to me, the lugs are sharp, dial is clean and movement is also clean, the gold cap layer is still quite thick.

I'm also wondering what should be a fair price range for it. Right now it's at around 2k USD.

Contrary to the 14381 next to it, the 168.005 seems legit. A “and here it’s next to a redial”-picture doesn’t exactly increase my trust in a seller regardless.
Is it on auction? Your comment that “right now it’s at 2k$” sounds like it, which surprises me, as that’s above what gold capped 168.005s usually go for. Price sounds about right for a steel, date-less example in that condition.

Thank you. This is a local marketplace sale so 2k is the straight asking. Seller was up front about the redial on the black dial so that did build my trust.

Interesting, didn’t know full steel would fetch for more than gold cap.

Typically, solid gold > stainless > gold cap > filled or plated. But the overlap in price range between stainless and gold cap is quite substantial, depending on the condition.

The price is a little high imo. I would pay around 2k for a stainless in very good condition.

Significantly. How much depends on many factors (ref, configuration, desirability etc) but a difference of 20%+ is certainly not unheard of.

The bigger factor for doglegs is the date vs no-date. 168.005/14902s are much more common and it seems the date window isn’t appreciated by most collectors nowadays, resulting in a notable price difference.

Date, no date, SS, gold capped, Onyx, black painted, X hair or not? Small marker at 3? are all factors you should consider when buying a doggie.

Interesting value comparison for me being a newbie on connies : clear for me with regards to a solid gold, but what makes a SS higher in value as compared to a GC ?

Collector perception, nothing more.

The gold capped models originally sold for a bit more than the solid steel. The opposite is true today.

For me the price of 2k it's also a little higher but with the inflation from our days who know?

Yeah, seems Connie prices keep on increasing... IMHO a iconic model still undervalued, which is likely to keep raising in the coming years.

I remember seeing this FS post. Originally seller was claiming the 14381 was original and resistant to inquiries suggesting otherwise. Sounds like the seller maybe changed his tune. In any event I agree the asking price seems a little steep. That coupled with the sellers original attitude turned me away from it.
