Solid Gold or Champagne Dial on this Constellation?

Hey Guys,

The Dial on this heavily polished 14393 was advertised as solid gold, but i noticed that the brushing is more radial like on a sunburst champagne Dial. Other Constellations with Solid Gold Dials have vertical brushing, so Im wondering if this one is actually solid gold or just sunburst champagne? Maybe someone in here is able to recognize from pictures or if not, is there a way for me to tell what its actually made of?
Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

If you use the SEARCH function and type in OR MASSIF, you will discover that solid gold alloy dials are marked as indicated.

Why do you care if it is brass or gold anyhow? The dial adds about a gram to the total mass. And unless you are buying it to scrap it matters not a jot. My 2p worth is that it is probably brass.

You are correct that deluxe gold dials generally have vertical graining.

However, this dial has the classic ‘fat’ flat onyx inserts that are used on deluxe gold dials, so this would initially lead me to assume it is a deluxe gold dial.

Gold dials of this era are only stamped on the rear (OM markings on the front of the dial came in around the end of the 60s / early 70s IIRC).

The only way to be absolutely sure is to see the reverse of the dial.

FWIW I also have my doubts about the script and minute markings on this dial.

Hope that helps.

It’s true that a gold dial adds very little to the value of the watch but it does make a special watch that little bit extra special. 😉

And if you’re a train-spotter type collector it does mean you can add another reference number to your tally…..

Thanks a lot for your answer, it definitely helps. Would you be so kind to elaborate on the script and minute markings part? Like, what looks off to you?
The pictures arent really good quality, in reality everything on the Dial looks pretty sharp (at least to me). Then again, its not like I have a lot of experience, I get my knowledge mostly from this Forum and Youtube.

Kind Regards,
Max

The pic of mine isn’t that great either but you can see the serifs on the upper lettering which appears to be missing and the spacing looks off.
The As look the wrong shape.
The Constellation text just looks to be the wrong proportion and the e looks wrong.

It could be edge of crystal distortion but the large seconds hache at 15 looks like a blob and that at 18 looks iffy.
