I do sometimes struggle to differentiate onyx and black paint with naked vision.
Any tips that you folks can share?

Many of the Connie onyx inserts are faceted and have a sharp ridge along the top - but unfortunately not all. (See Hoi’s de luxe dial for flat onyx)
A better way to spot onyx inserts (also described as jet inserts in late 60s and 70s watches) is that they have a depth to them unlike painted inserts.
This can be seen on the ends of the indices.

enclosed indices like the C-case examples are harder to define.

this from hijak’s watch on first page - you can see depth and ridge.

In @hoipolloi s shot from the previous page

You need to look at the ends of the markers to see the U shape of the markers with the in-layed Onyx that is raised.

Been a while since I posted my rose gold capped 168.010 Connie in this thread. ( 4 and a half years)
A couple more to add now:
14382 de luxe (fat onyx)

14381 cross hair

168.005 cross hair

168.005 gold

168.004

A gaggle of 168.010s

no idea why there’s an extra pic of the 168.010 pie pan - but it’s pretty, so I’ll leave it there

Very nice pictures Al 😁

Do you folks know if this reference(168.019) has onyx or painted markers?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I wondered if this might be a good place to discuss this. I’ve read that true onyx inserts can only be found on gold dial/marker constellations, and SS ones have rubber instead. I was wondering if anyone can shed further light on this? The difference is in the depth; onyx is shiny and a deeper black whilst the rubber is more matte.

Think what you read was

There is onyx and painted ones never heard of rubber inserts on any constellations.

My stainless steel has onyx.
