Thanks for coming up for me. Don't worry though, my enthusiasm for this watch is only increasing after the additional info I got from the dealer. I do think however that the tone of some posts is not how I want my kids to be when they're all grown up........I think it's un unfortunate side-effect of the anonymity of the web and most of the people here wouldn't talk like that to their fellow watch-lovers. At lest I hope not!
Good luck with that.

In this case it’s the 10 of June because the month goes on Roman numerals. The year would not change either way.
Incidentally it also makes sense as 10 of June because that’s the order in which we write dates in Spain, as opposed to June 10th

The story would be far more interesting if these were the Salamancas connected to the watch.

I've got the original photo before the text was added and then you can see the Father wearing the watch which I own now! I'll post it as soon as I can find it....and it's not actors it's the original dad & sons.

So I think me being "sensitive" about the way some post here is about the way we communicate in Europe vs the US. Maybe the same as the leaders, like the president of the US vs .... 😗 OK I'm running for cover !!!

Don't kill me, it's just a joke! 😎

I quite like the date on the watch as it tells me when it first came into someone's possession, which you cannot otherwise know without paperwork. Obviously it does not add any value, but equally there is no reason for anyone to have added the date recently as they would gain nothing by it. I also like the fact that it is a few weeks before the moon landing. Nice watch.

I got an answer from the seller in Spain! Here it is unedited: needles being "hands" which I commented on because of the painting of them. I even got a hug! Must have overpaid! (Just a joke as I paid just north of "good" for this reference on the Speedmaster101 site INCLUDING the bracelet! Now if the extract confirms shipping to Spain I'll be happy.

"Hello, I'm glad to hear from you.
This watch was bought from a man from Salamanca, his son sold it to me.
They gave it to the father for his wedding.
Bought in a jewelry store in Salamanca many years ago by this man.

And to this day a single owner. We bought it three weeks ago.
I hope what I enjoy and about the needles ... they came to us like that.

Thank you very much for everything and a hug."

I,m confused - surely it cannot be a single owner watch, if the hands were buggered when the previous owner bought it ?

What am i missing please?

As I stated the watch had one service in '83. This is when the hands were re-touched (your description of "buggered" is even better !) The son of the owner then sold it to a dealer 3 weeks ago who sold it to me untouched. I guess you're right that it isn't a one-owner watch anymore since I own it now. That would be true of all one-owner watches that get sold though! They are only one-owner watches when in possession of the original owner. One could even go as far as to say that the son was an owner too as he sold it.

The only engraved watch i have is this huge hunk of gold plated Seamaster 176.005 chrono from 1972

I guess it could have been a wedding present or something - maybe the marriage went tits up or maybe something more tragic happened

Adds intrique, but little else

I hope you get to hear back from the original owner's son.
If not, Salamanca looks like a beautiful city and province to visit one day.
By my calculations 10th June 1969 was a Tuesday. Would there have been many weddings on a Tuesday?
Maybe you could plan a holiday and do some sleuthing in the public records department.

That kind of thing would certainly keep me amused.
In a similar way though if you never actually found any more out I'd still find the speculation and wondering interesting.

Edit:
Ok, you've got to go to Salamanca. 😀
This was added to the 'new' cathedral (started in 1513) in 1992.

In some instances I like an engraved date.

For instance my girlfriend has quite a few pieces of English Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery (not jewelry!). A couple are engraved with initials and dates such as t.w. - c.g. 25.12.32 in the most beautiful script.

Does it add monetary value? No
Would I/she want such an engraving on an engagement/wedding ring? No
Does it add a degree of charm and history to a piece? Absolutely!

It's called streamlining words to take less time writing.

Jewelry is an accepted spelling on this side of the Pond. We don't even use the "u" in behaviour either. 'Muricans are uncouth savages!

Very interesting indeed. I was planning on visiting Spain soon anyway. I'll try to visit Salamanca and make my own pic of my Speedy with the astronaut in the background! It seems the poor astronaut was vandalised in 2010 and repaired thereafter.
