Very nice! My solution was to adopt this library card catalog that was about to be trashed.

After buying a speedmaster date in 2006, i started googling for more info. Big mistake. What? Omega has vintage watches? Heyyyyyyyy, that's quite nice.... and so the madness began.

With just a few watches, they lived in a drawer, but as they seemed to reproduce in the dark, i started buying boxes. I was gifted a couple and ended up with about 10 large watch boxes. Most of them in the pic below.

I didn't like the inconvenience of having to stack them up or keeping them back in the drawer/shelf/cupboard after i was done. . So i spent an afternoon modding some high density foam which i really liked. The bracelets/straps go in the hole leaving just the watch heads visible. Yup, WATCH HEADS 😗 . Look at all them watch heads....I could see all the watches & daily selection was made really easy. Unfortunately, they got dusty & as you can see, i ran out of space again.

So, i got my hands on some shipping crates & converted one for storage.

It wasn't ideal though & it was a little cumbersome with the heavy lid. I was looking around for wood to do a bit of carpentry, section it out, compartments, double layer, voice activated spring loaded cover, retina scanner..... problem was finding the wood. i could only get mdf or plywood, in 8' x 4' sheets. Want it smaller? Its $2 per cut.

I drew up my plans & decided i either had to invest in some power tools or get one made. I like working with my hands & who doesn't like power tools? Of course i also needed a workbench, router, jig saw, etc... I compromised & decided that if i didn't want to be single, i would convert an existing cabinet into something i could use.

Months of scouring garage sales, used furniture shops, flea markets, craigslist, facebook pages & even notice boards turned up nothing. Until I walked into a furniture store in a pricey neighbourhood one weekend & saw a tallboy that caught my eye. It had 4 large drawers & was made for linen/blankets. And, they could customise anything....

And that's how i ended up with this. Those are my 2nd choice handles,

With a flip top!

To have each drawer customised would have cost too much, so i'm still looking out for some nice wood for a little weekend project.

Top draw, Omegas, 6 of them are out for servicing.

The other drawers..

Also a drawer just for parts

And one for straps, bracelets & buckles.

Sorry for the bad pics 😉
Great job , but what about expansion 😕
Perhaps you should get going on plans for ordering duplicate tallboy. That place goes out business in the future and you're screwed.🤦

Nice tallboy, that is a great solution for your collection. Mine is a smattering of cigar boxes that an ex-girlfriend who worked at a tobacconist gave me; somehow this solution no longer seems adequate.

Uhm... good thing about collecting vintage is, when the missus asks you, you can honestly reply " This one? no babe, its old. Honestly, its not new"

I'm not actually planning on getting any more, 😗 but as you can see, I've only filled 3 out of the 7 drawers with watches. If i really need to, the parts & straps can go into boxes... Hopefully not though, as it is, if i rotate all watches equally, i'd be wearing each watch only 2-3 days a year. And, i'm kept busy sending them out a few at a time for servicing, repairs, etc.

Something like mine, good job 👍.

A word of warning. That matting you used will react to some plastics and also exude plastic oil and it will stain leather etc.

I got rid of mine and just used paper drawer liner until I can find something that doesn't react or give off chemicals.

Maybe some carpet tiles cut to size?

Cheers

Jim

Jim, thanks for that, i figured i had a couple of years to get the drawers properly lined with felt or some other fabric, but never thought of carpet tiles hmmm... i'll check that out.

Btw, yours doesn't exist till we see the pics 😀

Here's a few shots showing the issue with those mats. These boxes were on those mats in my drawers. All of plastic surfaces on the boxes should be spotless and shiny. Where they've been in contact with the mats there is significant chemical staining leached from the mats. If it can happen like that, I'm not putting anything valuable on them.

As for my "watch tallboy", I guess I'll have to ask @Syrte to vouch for me 😁

Those sure give "staggering" a whole new meaning.

I sure can attest to seeing photos of several drawer-fulls of watches... Didn't you post the piece of furniture in the thread where those were discussed?

😲 Wow! Very impressive!
If that's how you store your watches, what's your solution for the original boxes and docs? Or is there a magic number of watches after which ones gives up on such stuff?

It almost seems trivial to ask what model PeliCase you have in the first photo?

I just noticed today that Sinn are offering such a case on their website (in the pdf price list doc).

Hey @Longbow I got my case from the Martinator,

https://www.facebook.com/themartinatorishere/app/251458316228/

He has several sizes to choose from, this was the largest he had back when i got mine, but he's had different inserts done since then and the sizes go from 2 watches to 32 watches now. He also used to sell just the inserts, for those who already have the cases. Martin's a really nice guy & the cases are the result of him finding a storage solution for his watches. There's a video of a land rover running over the case 🙄

The boxes go in the large drawer at the bottom, vintage watches have much smaller boxes than their modern counterparts & not many of mine have boxes anyway. I'm not too bothered about my watches coming with boxes, it's a bonus if they do...
