YEET
·It has been exactly 1 year since I bought my Speedmaster at the Omega boutique. Not going to regurgitate any technical information on here. This is for that guy or gal on the fence for a Speedmaster. Here's my straight to the point and realistic (casual) review of it.
TLDR
For me the Omega Speedmaster (3861) is the watch I could live with the rest of my life.
Story (feel free to skip this section):
I'm a music producer. Mix and master engineer. Also ghost producer. I've always been "practical" with money (bills, rent) and investing in my craft, but I thought to myself it's time to treat myself. I wanted a simple, practical watch and maybe some story to go along with it.
Then I saw this video:
Damn they got me. I love art and I love music. I was teary eyed the first view. And I was like "Yup this is it." After seeing this video I aligned my life to obtain the Speedmaster.
Besides that video you know what sold me to the Speedmaster? The essence of the story. This watch to me is the embodiment of dreams. To go after what you want to do in life. To do something amazing. To go to "your moon." To live your life with meaning. *I was filled with DETERMINATION.
I went to a local AD to try it on see it in the metal and I knew for sure without any doubt this was the watch for me.
So the day had finally arrived and I gave my Omega Boutique* a call. Asked for the 3861 Hesalite. Last one in the store and they held it for me for a few days. I walk in and was immediately greeted by Sally. We talked for a while just getting to know each other. She then pulled out the box and put the watch on my wrist. Wow I could not believe it. It's here! So after some awkward moments clearing the purchase through my bank, it was officially mine. Sally explained everything to me. The COSC, the METAS, the moonlanding, how to wind, the box turns into a travel case, etc. Unbeknownst to her I watched every** Speedmaster video in existence before hand. After her song and dance I exclaimed in the store "Woooooo! I did it!" I was so happy. Ear to ear smile. I thanked the the staff for their hospitality. They said congratulations and sent me on my way with that big red bag.
Since that day the watch has been on my wrist every single day.
*If you're buying your first Omega luxury timepiece I highly recommend to just go to the boutique (if it's not too much of an inconvenience). Don't just "add to cart." Sure you might pay more but I think the experience is so worth it. It's all about the vibe. The emotion. It makes you feel good about the purchase and makes it a little more memorable. That's just me though.
**not every, but do your homework!
Review:
Dial
Simple black dial and white hands. At night the lume reads well too. Even though the dial may look busy, trust me it's easy to read after some practice and getting used to. The sub-dials will "disappear" when you read the time. The stepped dial is a treat to look at certain lighting conditions. The sub-dials remind me of dials in a race car.
Moonwatch
NASA is cool. Space is cool. Astronauts are cool. The Apollo missions. The moon landing is one of mankind's high score in my opinion. On my first grade paper I put astronaut as a job occupation. I went to Challenger Middle School. It's a cool story to share with at the bar with strangers or with friends.
Bracelet / Clasp / NATO strap
The bracelet is so comfortable I forget I'm wearing it sometimes. I can wear it all day with no discomfort. Rarely pulls hair when putting on or taking off (even then I'm used to it). The bracelet tapers very nicely and hugs my skinny wrist well. This was one of the main reasons I pulled the trigger on this iteration of the Speedmaster. The vintage inspired bracelet and clasp is just *chefs kiss* bravo. The Omega NATO strap is even more comfortable than the bracelet.
Speedmaster
The name, the script, makes me think of race cars and I like cars.
Professional
I like to think I am.
Manual Wind
ASMR and I find it fun to do. I usually wind it in the morning when I'm still in bed or with my coffee. It does take practice to get used to winding the recessed crown. If you find this to be a nuisance or chore this watch isn't for you. I look at the manual wind aspect as probably the best part of the watch. I don't think I'll ever tire of the routine.
Hacking
Since this watch can only run fast, this makes "resetting" the watch trivial. Just pull the crown for a few seconds then push it back in. I usually do this once a week. The crown can be tough to pull if you have no fingernails.
Tachymetre / Dot Over 90
The tach adds to that tool watch vibe and I enjoy looking at the aluminum bezel. Dot over 90 and I'm a 90s kid. Ayeee.
Stealthboi
In my one year owning this watch, I've had only a handful compliments/comments on my watch: one in the boutique, my parents, some relatives, girlfriend, and a watch dude with a Rolex. I'm sure the times I've been out in public people think "Cool watch!" but it's not enough to initiate a conversation. The only time people notice my watch is if I bring it up or if they're watch people. This watch is low key, mature, and it is humble. It is the quiet one in the room. You get it for you, no one else. No need to be loud, its resume says it all. Perfect, just how I like it.
Hesalite
Dat warmth, dat dome, dat dial clarity, how the dial comes in as you roll your wrist to tell the time, and dat Omega logo. I've had scratches on the crystal from time to time. I use Polywatch and has not failed me yet. Hairline scratches is all I've managed to collect. I'm careful but I don't baby my speedy.
Hippocampus / Closed Caseback
When equipped 1% increase in luck and -2% travel time.
"Speedy Tuesday:" on Tuesdays, your day goes 5% faster. (ahaha)
I like the engravings and literature. It's on my wrist like 99% of the time so all I see is the dial anyways. I take a peek at the back once in a while.
Chronograph
- time food deliveries
- time dj sets
- time your steaks
- time how long your s/o takes to get ready
- time lunch breaks
- time how long you've spent netflix n' chilling
- time your grocery runs
- time how slow I run
- I like clicking buttons
- measure how fast your uber/lyft driver is going
- a bigger (zoomed in) running second hand
Just some ways I use the chronograph. It is actually a very useful (and fun) complication. You just have to remember what you were timing in the first place.
COSC/METAS
No more fear of refrigerator magnets or the occasional airport.
Never Out of Place
Shorts? Good.
Tuxedo? Nice.
Naked? Even better.
It fits any life situation and adapts to your wardrobe.
Easy to buy
I went there.
50m
Washing hands, washing dishes, Universal Studios Water World wet zone, or occasional rainfall. I take it off when I shower, or go into the ocean.
I clean the speedy with an old toothbrush, water, and soap. Gentle scrubbing around the pushers and crown. I let the tap run then have the watch right under it when I rinse it. For my day to day the Speedmaster's 50m of water resistance is enough.
3861
So far so good. It gets a thumbs up for the first year of service from me. It has not deviated at all from the day I picked it up. (+1 sec/day)
Case
Hairline scratches on the edge of lugs. I wear it everyday so it's no surprise. The first scratch sucks but you'll get over it.
The 12 marker
😉 fun joke with the bois
Closing:
This watch makes me feel good. It's a reminder to myself that "I can do it." It's motivating. It's a feeling of accomplishment. Never give up. Reach for the stars. Chase your dreams.
It's good for the bad days too.
I always tell myself "Rough day today, but hey at least I got my Speedmaster. 😀" It improves my mood by at least a peg.
Also it tells time.
I'm glad I went with the Omega Speedmaster. No ragrets. No buyer remorse. The ethos of Omega and what they stand for is worth every penny to me. Here's to more memories with my speedy! <3
Thanks for reading!
